“I was drawn to a career in engineering because it’s a practical way to analyze, explain and predict the physical works, and then use the knowledge to enhance it,” said Kirsten Murphy, Flowserve Product Engineer (PE). “For the same reasons, I originally set out to study the brain, but I realized I had more passion for math than anatomy!” Kirsten began her Flowserve journey in 2017 as an R&D intern at our facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. She excelled in a variety of engineering roles and sparked innovation for our compressor seal product lines. As a PE, Kirsten is responsible for developing products, proofing concepts and pursuing new opportunities – such as leading an initiative to improve the manufacturing method for dry-gas seal face lift-off technology. She explains that despite the highly technical calculations and design involved in this work, communication is key. “The majority of the solutions we develop are the result of collaboration: We arrive at the best solutions by combining expertise and perspectives from all areas of the product-development process.” Kirsten fee
