Climate change — and its increasingly visible threat to people’s lives and our cities — continues to elicit a sense of urgency everywhere. The Gensler Research Institute surveyed over 1,800 adults to understand the ways in which individuals in the U.S. have been and expect to be affected by climate change, natural disasters, and severe weather events — as well as what actions they are taking or are willing to take in order to make our cities and communities more prepared for future climate events. Within the design community, licensure is intended to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our communities — yet for generations, greater structural inequality has made design complicit in enabling poor outcomes for Black individuals. Our research sought to uncover real-world examples where systemic racism has notably led to design injustice, while also identifying existing practices and policies that elevate the way we design to create an optimal experience for all communities. Through our report, the Gensler Research Institute sought to better understand what elements drive positive living experiences for residents. We also hoped to identify what factors residents would likely prefer and prioritize in the future — particularly among those in multifamily housing. To investigate these questions, we surveyed over 13,000 residents across nine diverse markets: Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Dallas, London, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Singapore. Our results point to a need for fresh perspectives on residential design and development, and to challenge norms and raise the bar for the residential experience. Gensler's U.S. Workplace Survey Winter 2021 data shows that while companies are increasingly making their office reentry plans clear, there remains a gap between company and individual worker expectations — but there is also an opportunity to create a series of policy and workplace changes that can encourage employees to return to in-person work. Findings from Gensler's latest City Pulse Survey Fall 2021 show that our cities are rebounding and thriving — but that the relationship between residents and cities is changing. At COP26, Gensler announced its green materials initiative—a move that has the larger goal of shifting the real estate value chain towards net zero carbon emissions. The larger conversations that took place at COP26 reflect a shift we have observed in recent years, with building owners and real estate professionals steering their investments towards higher-performing sustainable assets, as well as taking actions that reflect a desire to operationalize decarbonization goals across their portfolios and develop cost savings strategies. Our collective action as an industry, through collaboration and communication, is paramount to making positive changes to the built environment so that we may continue designing spaces that are inclusive, equitable, and help individuals lead healthy lives.
