Today surrounded by young professionals, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory announced his plans for a pilot program that addresses student loan debt as an impediment to homeownership for young people as part of his efforts to attract and retain millennials’ residency on Long Island. Legislation he introduced this week would direct the Department of Economic Development and Planning to investigate and develop a program, as have other governments across the country, through which young adults can pay down student loans while enjoying the benefits of homeownership. In 2016, Presiding Officer Gregory established the Next Generation Advisory Council, which serves as a platform for young adults to discuss their ideas and concerns. An issue that the Council discusses frequently is a lack of financial capability and support in establishing long-term residency in Suffolk County, which can become even more challenging when a good chunk of their paychecks goes towards paying off student loans.
