H2M’s Rachel Kim, P.E. and Gregory Forstrom, P.E. had a great time at the Career Carnival for Kids hosted by the Parsippany Library on November 30! Their booth, catered to kids aged 8-14 and their families, featured cool water-themed activities. The night was a success! Our team had engaging conversations with kids, parents, and even delved into PFAS discussions. As storms continue to get more extreme, communities need to prepare. H2M architects + engineers has been working with the Village of Westhampton Beach to harden their Main Street shopping district and develop a new vision. As we delve deeper into our series on emerging contaminants, let's take a moment to look back to when Long Island health officials were deeply concerned about potential contaminants. H2M conducted a study that not only addressed this issue but also uncovered new threats to the region's water supply. In 1965, Long Island health officials feared a potential crisis: saltwater intrusion into its underground freshwater aquifers. Suffolk County retained H2M to prepare the first Suffolk County Comprehensive Public Water Supply Study, citing the firm’s expertise in water quality analysis and treatment. One of H2M’s founders, Sam McClendon, was a subcontractor for the Nassau County version. H2M examined every major groundwater source in both Suffolk and Nassau Counties. They explored the complex interplay between rainfall, run-off, the ocean, and the Long Island Sound. After nearly five years of diligent work, we unveiled our findings, using an impressive Hele-Shaw parallel plate model developed in collaboration with MIT over 18 months. The verdict? Saltwater intrusion wasn't an immediate threat, but there were concerns about pollution from sewage disposal and synthetic detergents contaminating groundwater. This groundbreaking report was shared with clients on July 10, 1970, on behalf of R. G. Holzmacher, P.E. More than 50 years ago, H2M’s team of experts were already observing and addressing the threat of contaminants in Long Island’s water supply. #flashbackfriday #emergingco
