We were honored and excited to receive an American Innovation and Social Innovation Index Award this year, and we have our co-workers to thank! To all of our co-workers, thank you for your hard work and bright minds that continue to transform the way we meet the many people in unique, game-changing ways.
In 2020, when life at home became all of life, we were there, listening, learning and documenting it all as part of our ongoing Life at Home research. As always, we wanted to get closer to what home means for us all, and to explore how it can support, nurture and nourish our wellbeing – especially during a pandemic. Discover what we created from our findings – from our IKEA Virtual Greenhouse of plant-led creative masterclasses, to the rich insights in this year’s full report, ‘The Big Home Reboot’. All to help the many people make home the place where they have all they need.
IKEA has become more digital and accessible while embracing new ways to connect with more people. Customer behavior and media consumption has changed, and the IKEA Catalogue has been less used. Inter IKEA Systems B.V., the worldwide IKEA franchisor, has therefore taken the emotional, but rational decision to respectfully end the successful career of the IKEA Catalogue - and we look to the future with excitement.
Today, Dec. 3rd, is International Day of People with Disabilities. In recognition of this day, our co-workers with DiverseAbilities (that’s how we refer to what others may call disabilities) are sharing their stories. Christopher, thank you for sharing your story. “I work in IKEA Food service in San Diego. My big challenge is to communicate with customers. I'm good with reading lips but it's hard for me to understand what words they say, for example "cough" sounds like "coffee." And now they all have masks covering their faces due to COVID, so it's a big challenge. I'm lucky my team leader allows me to use my phone for text messages to make it easier to communicate. It's good to share experiences of people with DiverseAbilities and what their challenges at work are. This will help us improve. At work, be fair and don't think people with disabilities can't do things. We can handle challenges at work; I can do anything." Christopher, Food Service Co-worker IKEA San Diego
At IKEA, spreading the word about the power of play is a serious business. In 2018, we partnered with UNICEF, National Geographic, Unilever and The LEGO Foundation to form the Real Play Coalition. Together, we’re working to promote play-based opportunities that help child development across the world. 🌎 🏃
There's no denying that a pet completes a home. Teaming with PAWS Chicago, the largest no-kill animal shelter in the Midwest, our IKEA Bolingbrook and Schaumburg locations are displaying cutouts of adoptable cats and dogs this holiday season.
By 2025, 50% of the main meals we offer at IKEA restaurants will be plant-based and 80% will be non-red meat. We’re excited to provide the many with more nutritious, affordable and sustainable dining options. We hope you’re hungry! 🍽️
To celebrate our most sustainable member of the (m)eatball family, we're hosting a plant ball recipe contest for our US co-workers. Congrats to Glenn Phillips (center) for his "Swag Plant Balls" recipe, which won 1st place at our IKEA Atlanta store!
