Growing up in Tijuana, Mexico, Olivia Graeve was interested in pursuing the sciences but didn’t quite know how to make a career of it. Fast-forward several years later, Professor Graeve founded Enlace, a cross-border student exchange program for scientific research at UC San Diego. We are proud to partner with Enlace to help empower high school and college students from Mexico and the US with the skills to choose a career in #STEM and pursue a doctorate. #Genomics4All #inclusion
Erica Gonzalez is a #RealTimeRevolutionary for her contributions to the healthcare industry over the last 22 years. Having started her career as a dental assistant with the goal of becoming an oral surgeon, Erica pivoted when she was sidelined by a wrist injury. Still, she was passionate about pursuing a career that made a difference in people’s lives, and realized she could still make an impact in a different way. Erica is currently an Administrative Partner at Illumina, supporting teams in Global Supply Chain and Global Facilities, as well as serving as Operations Chair for our iLatinx Employee Resource Group. “Between the connections I’ve made with local vendors/small businesses when organizing events for my teams, to the various Give Back activities our CSR team offers Illumina has been more than just a company I work for. It is one of the many reasons I am #IlluminaProud!”, she says.
The genomic health revolution is here. A big shout out to everyone who attended #IGF and tuned in from afar. Together we can power better human health.
Sequencing just got even cheaper and more powerful. This morning at the Illumina Genomics Forum, we unveiled our fastest, most cost-efficient sequencing machine yet – the NovaSeq X Series. This technology will slash the cost to just $200 per human genome while providing a readout at twice the speed and the capability to sequence 20,000 genomes per year; our current machines can do about 7,500. In a feature article from WIRED, Francis deSouza shared, “As we look to the next decade, we believe we’re entering the era of genomic medicine going mainstream. To do that requires the next generation of sequencers. We need price points to keep coming down to make genomic medicine and genomic tests available much more broadly.” We’ve started selling the new machines today and are shipping them next year. In honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth, we’re celebrating a scientist who paved the way in the field of #botany – Ynés Mexía. Mexía, who gathered over 145,000 specimens throughout her 13-year career, often traveled solo or with a few Indigenous guides to gather plants. She advocated for Indigenous rights in the areas she collected, and would spend months in the field, riding horseback and sleeping outdoors – which shocked many as she was a woman doing this work. Mexía was brave, fierce and not afraid to challenge racism, sexism or ageism. #ScientistSpotlight
