Styrofoam is non-biodegradable and non-recyclable and can take an estimated 500 years to decompose. That has been a challenge for Intermountain Home Services, as the team transports orders that require cooling, such as medications or perishable supplies. These orders must be kept at specific temperatures to ensure they remain effective and safe for use. However, the traditional solution for transportation – large Styrofoam coolers – has led to numerous patient complaints. These large foam coolers are not only environmentally unfriendly but also inconvenient and have become a pain point for patients looking to dispose of them. With this challenge in mind, Rod Norton, supply chain organization inventory operations manager within the Home Services Fulfillment Center, and his team began looking for a more sustainable solution. Their efforts led to the discovery of a new Green Cell Foam cooler, an eco-friendly packaging solution made from starch. This material is both biodegradable and compostable, quickly dissolving in water or breaking down as compost. The redesigned cooler also enables the Home Services team to consolidate shipments for certain orders, reducing the number of packages sent. Additionally, it maintains a cooler temperature more effectively, which minimizes the need for ice bricks and further reduces costs.
As caregivers, we spend so much time caring for patients that it’s easy to forget we can be patients, too. Whether we work for a health system or not, patients from all walks of life deserve quality and equitable care. Ambyr Spencer, clinical operations manager at Primary Children’s Hospital Miller Lehi Campus in Lehi, Utah, found herself in this situation in 2021. Her experience with Intermountain’s cardiology team, specifically Dr. Alberto Brizolara, reinforced the values we promote in clinical excellence and doing the right thing. Discover their inspiring story of friendship and exceptional cardiology care in the article below.
