This Monday, January 16, the U.S. commemorates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This federal holiday gives us the chance to celebrate Dr. King’s work as a prominent and inspiring civil rights leader. Among his many contributions, Dr. King fought for equality within our education system, and pushed to end segregation in our nation’s schools. At Kokua, we strive to uphold these values, and believe all children deserve role models who will empower them to succeed. We are so grateful to our educators for creating environments where students can learn, grow, and explore their potential. We are proud of the diverse range of identities and perspectives our Kokua teachers and team bring to this work each and every day. In addition to honoring his legacy, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service. We encourage everyone to follow Dr. King’s example and give back to your community - every small contribution counts and gets us closer to Dr. King’s vision for the future.
Kokua is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month alongside schools, communities, students and families across the country. This month gives us the chance to honor the history and culture of generations of people who came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. As an estimated 28% of K-12 students in our country identify as Hispanic or LatinX, we encourage educators to take the time to explore and amplify the influence of Hispanic and Latin American heritage, and incorporate these celebrations into your time with students over the next few weeks. You might see student work lining the halls, or follow lesson plans that celebrate and educate about the amazing contributions Hispanic and LatinX people have made to our country. Kokua is a Hawaiian word that means ‘to come together to fulfill a need’ - regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or identity. At Kokua, we believe that diversity enriches our life experience and perspective, and we all benefit when we come together from different backgrounds for a common purpose.

The Charter Substitute Teacher Network (CSTN) is now Kokua Education! The Charter Substitute Teacher Network (CSTN) was founded in 2011 by a former teacher. Started in Chicago, this network of substitute teachers has grown to over 2500 passionate guest teachers serving many of the highest performing public, charter, and private schools across the country. CSTN has changed to Kokua Education to more fully encompass our mission of opening young minds to what’s possible. In Hawaiian, Kokua means to come together to fulfill a need. Every day, Kokua Educators come together for children, helping them discover who they are and who they can become. We believe that proximity is power and one guest teacher can change a life forever. Kokua Education partners with innovative schools across the country to provide reliable guest teachers along with hands-on support to ensure a successful school day.
