Mary has been named to the Texas Nurses Association's 25 Outstanding Texas Nurses for 2024. It did not come as a shock when Mary decided to go into nursing 42 years ago. In fact, Mary picked nursing because there were simply too many educators already in her family. The youngest girl out of 10 siblings, Mary is from a family that all chose service oriented careers - teachers, pharmacists, police officers, paramedics. Mary had her eye on the new Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and started as a nurse in their maternal child internship program in 1982. After six months of working in the NICU, Mary fell in love with it and she was offered a full-time position on nights. In her 42 years at Memorial Hermann Southwest, Mary has held the role of bedside nurse, charge nurse, educator, clinical resource manager and director of NICU and newborn nursery. Mary also created the first quality committee for the NICU and is the chair of the Hospital Evidence-Based Practice & Research Committee. Mary has had a very accomplished nursing career and feels honored and humbled to be named one of the top 25 outstanding nurses in Texas. "I didn’t get here by myself but with the help of amazing teachers and mentors. This award means so much to me and I accept it in honor of all the nurses that paved the way for me and the ones that I have worked with over the years." Aprille joined Memorial Hermann more than 20 years ago after the support and guidance she received during clinical rotations as a nursing student, which positively impacted her as a nurse and a leader. She worked caring for patients at multiple Memorial Hermann locations before transitioning into leadership to focus on improving the quality of care. "As a frontline nurse, I was always interested in the 'why' behind the processes, guidelines and policies we follow," she says. "I saw opportunities to improve the care we provided and wanted to be a part of the evolution of nursing practice." Now, as Director of Quality, Patient Safety, and Infection Prevention at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital and Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital, she drives decisions to improve patient and health care professionals' safety and care. As part of the Emerging Professionals Employee Resource Group, Aprille uses her knowledge and experience to support other professionals just as her mentors did for her. Now she supports other health care professionals at Memorial Hermann through networking, leadership and collaboration. "I feel we must nurture the next generation by providing guidance, mentorship, and growth opportunities to help develop the skills and confidence needed to take on future leadership roles."

Edmar Jimenez-Adarme, a Clinical Manager - Med-Surg at Memorial Hermann-Greater Heights, went through our Nurse Residency Program 6 years ago and saw a different side of med-surg than the one he had seen in nursing school. "During my first three months, I was so impressed with the teamwork, and I fell in love with med-surg! Collaborating as a team to improve the patient's stay at the hospital then seeing them get better is so rewarding." As a Med-Surg Nurse, you play a critical role in caring for the patient before and after surgery. During his nursing career, Edmar has worked in a couple different med-surg units including general surgery oncology and the cardiac unit.
