SoutheastHEALTH has officially joined the Mercy family! Moving forward together, our combined strengths will elevate the level of health care provided in our community. Mercy's new locations in southeast Missouri include Mercy Hospital Southeast in Cape Girardeau, a 244-bed hospital with nearly a century of service to the community. Additionally, Mercy Hospital Stoddard, a 48-bed hospital in Dexter, Missouri, has provided health care to that region since 1969. These hospitals are complemented with a 102-bed behavioral health hospital and an additional 48 clinic locations in 11 communities delivered by 2,300 co-workers, 170-plus employed providers and 225 medical staff physicians. They also bring an innovative school of nursing and foundation dedicated to securing the best health care future for Southeast residents. Like us, they are now on a continual journey to deliver the faith-based, high-quality and lower-cost care for which we're known.
Burnout rates among the nation’s physicians and other health care professionals spiked dramatically in the last three years. To combat these spiking burnout rates, Mercy formalized structures for well-being within the organization. Peer support and mental health resources were made readily available, and additional plans in the near future will incorporate well-being more formally into leadership processes and roles. For this work, Mercy has been recognized by the American Medical Association’s Joy in Medicine™ Health System Recognition Program for our ongoing commitment to improving physician well-being and reducing burnout.
Educate, challenge and inspire! Take a peek at these memorable moments from Mercy’s recent leadership meetings in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Microsoft’s Dr. Peter Lee, one of the leading AI researchers, and John Halamka, M.D., M.S., president of Mayo Clinic Platform, discussed our unique collaboration and platform to transform patient care. We were also inspired by Mercy patient John O'Leary, who nearly lost his life 40 years ago in an explosion and is now the subject of a major motion picture; Sr. Mary Haddad, RSM, president of the Catholic Health Association; Judy Faulkner, the CEO of Epic; and patient Jessica Grib, a wife and mother who was not expected to live…but did! We're grateful for the stories shared and knowledge gained.
Brilliant nurses, assemble! This first-of-its-kind testing ground brings together some of Mercy's most innovative nurses who've "walked the walk" and know first-hand how to improve patient care. They're already hard at work to improve upon some of the industry's biggest challenges, and we cannot wait to see what's next!
$83.5 million — that's how much money Mercy saved taxpayers in 2022 by improving the health of Medicare patients while also lowering the cost of care. Mercy also earned a quality score in the top 15% among 482 Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) while serving the sixth-largest number of Medicare patients in the U.S. ACOs are groups of doctors, nurses, hospitals and other health care providers who come together voluntarily to give coordinated, high-quality care to the Medicare patients they serve. In short, ACOs prioritize the doctor-patient relationship — the way medicine is meant to be.
Mercy announced a new leader of human resources operations and strategic initiatives, Catherine Codispoti, for the health system’s multi-state region. Codispoti will join Mercy’s senior leadership team as senior vice president and chief people officer beginning Dec. 1, 2023.
Did you see Betty Jo Rocchio, our chief nursing officer, on the "front page" of Johnson & Johnson's website? She's giving us a peek behind the curtain - and explains what compelled her to become a nurse 32 years ago.

We're honored to be recognized by Becker's Hospital Review as a health system that invests in our co-workers' wellbeing, satisfaction and fulfillment. The dignity and diversity of our caretakers is what allows us to serve our communities and meet our patients where they are.
