We’re excited to announce that Dr. Laurie Leshin has been selected by Caltech to be the next JPL director! Dr. Leshin is an internationally recognized scientist and administrator, having served as deputy associate administrator of the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, director of science and exploration at NASA Goddard and, most recently, president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. An accomplished space scientist, Dr. Leshin also is a member of the Mars Science Laboratory science team that analyzes data collected by NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover to find evidence of water on the surface of Mars. In a statement, she said: “In many ways, this feels like a homecoming.” Dr. Leshin will become the first female director in JPL’s history and also will serve as vice president of Caltech, which has managed JPL on behalf of NASA since 1958. She will formally assume her position in May 2022. (Photo courtesy of Worcester Polytechnic Institute)

Virtual internships make it more challenging to connect at the Lab. Our employee resource group mentorship program not only provides learning opportunities but also a way for JPL interns to connect with others beyond their working groups (and have a little fun.) We asked participants of our employee resource group mentorship program to participate in a creative photo challenge and tell us what they learned from one another this summer. This is what Julie and Landon had to say: "I had a great time getting to know Landon! Through this mentorship, I got to know more about a different group at JPL, and I also learned about some cool new technologies related to clean energy (a common interest of ours)." - Julie X., Flight System Engineer, Mentor "I really enjoyed getting to know Julie this summer! I learned from Julie about all the different resource groups for employees and the many events they have through the year. I also got to learn about what some of the other sections do and it was pretty cool!" - Landon P., Software Computing Systems Intern, Mentee
