JPL research technologist Darmindra Arumugam has been named a recipient of a 2017 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award! He was recognized for his team’s development of the Precision Outdoor and Indoor Navigation and Tracking for Emergency Responders (POINTER), which uses magnetic fields instead of higher-frequency radio waves, such as those used in GPS, that are often blocked by building walls to track first responders.
