In June, Sandra Worthington went to Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital to receive her routine mammogram. Following the mammogram, her doctor called her back in to get an ultrasound which wasn’t uncommon for her since she has fibrocystic breasts (breasts composed of tissues that feel lumpy in texture). However, this time around her physician informed her that the mammogram had detected a small mass, approximately one cm in size, which required further testing. This included surgical removal and a biopsy that confirmed the presence of breast cancer, specifically HER2-positive breast cancer, known for its aggressive nature. Currently, she is undergoing her sixth cycle of chemotherapy out of 12, with plans for radiation therapy following the completion of her chemotherapy regimen. Sandra worked as an ICU and ER nurse at Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital, the very same facility where she received her diagnosis, for more than 35 years. Now retired, she stresses the importance of annual mammograms and the significance of early detection, as the early diagnosis has been a pivotal factor in her battle against breast cancer. "Working in a healthcare setting, I've seen people neglect or forget to have their annual mammograms. I get it – they're not the most enjoyable experience, but they're essential. I'm thankful that my cancer was discovered early when it was still small. If it hadn't been caught in those early stages, my story might have been very different,” she said.
