To open our S+N Pride Month, Keegan Hirst joined us to talk about the importance of allyship for the LGBTQI+ community. Keegan is Britain’s first professional rugby player to come out openly as gay, and we thank him for sharing his experiences with us of overcoming adversity and finding support and allies. At Smith+Nephew, we encourage everyone to be themselves, respecting and celebrating different perspectives, backgrounds and experiences.
Did you know that every Smith+Nephew employee gets 8 hours of paid time off to volunteer in their local community? Our team in Fremont, CA used their volunteer hours to support their local Boys & Girls Club. The team spent the day clearing planter boxes and preparing them for planting new vegetables and plants, ready for the clubhouse members to continue growing vegetables that they can eat and share with their families. The Boys & Girls club provides accessible afterschool care, enrichment programs and mentorship to young people to ensure that success is within their reach.
To help support occupational safety and health, the UN International Labour Organisation designated 28 April as World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Our Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team believe that effective health, safety and environmental practices go hand-in-hand with excellent business performance. To minimise environmental impacts and risks of occupational injury and illness in the workplace, the team introduced Mr Safety, a larger-than-life safety character, Mr. Safety shows up at town halls and site events to help remind employees about guarding against at-risk behaviours and unsafe conditions. To enhance Mr. Safety’s message, the team recently announced his partner, Safety Defender. The Safety Defender is a unique safety awareness technique to help assist with driving a positive safety culture, walking the plants and coaching colleagues to spot unsafe acts and conditions.
