Dr. Dineen Greer's upbringing was shaped by her mother, a Black nurse in the South during a time when healthcare had a pronounced hierarchy. In those days, the profession ranked doctors at the top, followed by nurses, with Black nurses in the South facing additional challenges. Driven by her mother's aspirations for her, Dr. Greer became a family doctor, fulfilling her mother's desire for her to be in a position of authority in healthcare. Currently, Dr. Greer imparts her knowledge and expertise to the next generation of doctors as the program director of the Sutter Family Medicine Residency Program. Beyond her responsibilities in the hospital and medical office, she oversees the training of over two dozen resident physicians across Sacramento, Davis, and a rural residency track in Amador County. The program's focus is on serving a diverse patient population, addressing various healthcare needs that may not be met elsewhere, including care for patients with HIV, AIDS, drug addictions, and transgender medicine. Reflecting on Black History Month, Dr. Greer acknowledges the positive changes since her childhood, not only in the field of medicine but in all aspects of society. However, she remains aware of the persistent challenges and divisions in the nation. Dr. Greer emphasizes the continued existence of functional segregation in many communities and entrenched viewpoints that further divide society.

Originally a lighthearted run aimed at supporting children, the Donut Dash has evolved into a significant fundraiser for the Sutter Medical Center's children's unit. In recognition of this contribution, the hospital expressed gratitude by naming a pediatric unit after the fundraiser. The Donut Dash, which commenced in 2009 and spans four miles with a pit stop at Marie's Donuts in Land Park, collects entry fees that contribute to purchasing items such as video games, art supplies, and iPads. These acquisitions are intended to enhance the hospital experience for children, making their stay more enjoyable.

Nestled in the heart of Sacramento, Health Professions High School stands out as a distinctive institution. Students adorn themselves in scrubs as their daily attire, symbolizing a profound commitment to healthcare. With a student body of 200, this school transcends the conventional notion of a learning space; it is a dedicated hub immersing students in the intricacies of the medical field. In a bid to further kindle the enthusiasm of these teens for healthcare, a recently launched afterschool club, El Corazón De La Salud (translating to “The Heart of Health”), offers them a dynamic new platform. Affectionately known as El Cor, the program's mission is to enlighten students about the expansive healthcare landscape. Here, students engage in interactive discussions and hands-on experiences with healthcare experts, delving into topics ranging from physical therapy to cardiovascular health. Sponsored with the support of Sutter Health and spearheaded by Samuel Merritt University, the club adds a valuable dimension to the students' educational journey. Yu Zhou, the college and career information technician at Health Professions High School, underscores that El Cor complements in-school learning by providing a unique space for students to explore their personal perspectives on the medical field. “It makes a significant difference to have actual professionals from the medical field engage with the students, imparting new skills and sharing real-life experiences,” she emphasizes.
In the spirit of giving, Sutter Health system employees were encouraged to take part in this year's "Together We Give" initiative. This program provided an opportunity for employees to contribute to the holiday season by purchasing gifts for individuals and families facing challenges. Sutter collaborated with 20 community organizations throughout its Northern California footprint to identify recipients in need. Participants had the flexibility to choose an individual, a family, or multiple families and select items from their holiday wish lists. The gifts purchased through this program were then directly dispatched to the partnering community organizations for distribution. One such organization benefiting from this initiative was the Child Abuse Prevention Center in Sacramento. Established in 1977, the Child Abuse Prevention Center serves as a comprehensive service, training, advocacy, and resource center. Committed to safeguarding children and promoting the development of healthy families, the center plays a crucial role in the community. Your participation in "Together We Give" has made a meaningful impact on the lives of those served by organizations like the Child Abuse Prevention Center, fostering a sense of community and care during the holiday season.
Staff members from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Eden Medical Center, part of Sutter Health, recently organized a special wedding ceremony with a unique purpose. This celebration wasn't for any of the hospital's staff; instead, it was a heartfelt gesture to honor one of their patients. Ed Dugan, a 77-year-old patient who had been admitted to the ICU for significant respiratory issues just before Thanksgiving, expressed his desire to marry Lucy Becerra, his partner of 37 years. Responding to this heartfelt wish, Eden chaplain Jenifer Ingerman Miller and several members of Dugan's care team collaborated with the couple's family to orchestrate a wedding ceremony within the confines of the ICU. Jonathan Judy-del Rosario, Eden's chief nurse executive, expressed admiration for the care team's holistic approach to meeting patients' needs in the hospital. He remarked, “This is a perfect example of our care teams holistically meeting our patients' needs while they are in the hospital. I am simply amazed at how people came together to make this such a special occasion for Ed and Lucy and their family.” While an ICU may not be the conventional setting for a wedding, the staff's compassion and thoughtfulness were invaluable to a family that might not have otherwise had the opportunity to celebrate such a significant milestone together. For the hospital staff involved, it offered a chance to recognize their patient as an individual beyond the hospital care setting.
