TNTP's Black Educator Excellence Cohort (BEEC) TNTP Teaching Fellows has launched the 4th Black Educator Excellence Cohort (BEEC) cohort. When students of color have teachers who look like them, they’re less likely to be suspended, more likely to be referred to gifted programs, and more likely to enroll in college. Yet the racial disparity between students and the teacher workforce is large and growing; while more than half of K-12 students are students of color, more than 80 percent of teachers are white. There’s no shortage of talented people of color who could help close the teacher diversity gap. Barriers such as program tuition, testing fees, and personal expenses while transitioning to teaching disproportionately impact teachers of color. Our commitment to diversifying the teacher workforce, TNTP Teaching Fellows is partnering with a national foundation to boost recruitment and retention of talented Black teachers by reducing these barriers and offering a suite of support during their first years in the classroom. Learn more about the BEEC by visiting our info page.

Over the upcoming months we will be looking for candidates without formal teacher training from all backgrounds to serve the students in one of the three communities we serve. We currently have teacher preparation programs in Baltimore, Indianapolis and New Orleans. The current climate of the country has presented some challenges around the look of the teaching profession, but the TNTP Teaching Fellows mission holds strong. The fight for education equity for our most vulnerable communities is more important than ever and students will need teachers who will not only hold high expectations for ALL students but support them as we all try to navigate the changes to our society. This spring and summer TNTP Teaching Fellows programs welcomed 490 participants who are now gearing up to support close to 16,000 students as schools reopen. Our 2020 cohort was the largest to date, and we are excited to serve our students and their communities starting this fall. Due to COVID-19, our program staff needed to shift quickly from our traditional in-person training to a completely virtual summer preparation. Fellows learned to build and cultivate classroom relationships in a rigorous environment designed to prepare them to deliver high quality instruction. Many Fellows had to up their technology game quickly, but they rose to the challenge! With the uncertainty surrounding the re-opening of schools, our virtual summer training both prepared participants for a virtual environment, and provided specific tools to virtually support students academically, socially and emotionally. This is a testament of our program staff?s dedication, and the resilience of our future educators. We can't wait to meet our new 2021 cohort, who will have such an impact on our students!
As we look to the day this crisis is over, we know one thing for sure: when students return to school, they will need talented and dedicated teachers. Making sure our students have those great teachers has been our mission for more than two decades, and during this crisis, it continues to be our focus. We are still accepting applications for open TNTP Teaching Fellows programs and are moving forward with plans to offer training this summer. While we don’t know exactly what this will look like, we will continue to listen to medical experts and work closely with our school partners to find the best way to offer a high-quality, safe experience for all of our participants. Now more than ever, we all need each other — and our students need YOU. Because of that, you can count on us to share the latest updates as we have them and ensure you have enough time to make an informed decision that is best for you. If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
