Black History Month is a time for celebrating the contributions made by Black leaders in all fields, including medicine. “I am proud of UCLA Health’s legacy with trailblazers such as Dr. Patricia Bath and Dr. Loretta Jones. Dr. Bath played a prominent role in reducing ophthalmologic health disparities and became the first African American woman to hold a medical patent to improve cataract treatment. Dr. Jones was a tireless civil rights activist, health policy advocate, and prominent researcher at UCLA Health. She leveraged community partnerships to reduce health disparities in under-resourced communities throughout the world.” - Medell Briggs-Malonson, MD, MPH, MSHS
