Madan Thangavelu was attending high school in Gwalior, India when his teacher cautioned him never to delete a computer’s system files. Naturally, he went home and erased the files on his father’s computer, kickstarting his interest in computer science. Today, Madan is a Director of Marketplace Engineering leading teams that power the logistics behind orders, fares, and product selection.

“Niko is my pupper, my son, and my service animal. We’re together 24/7. Always at my side, he’s quick to ease my medical condition, listening to me chit-chat and giving me an introduction to everyone we meet. If I’m ever lost in my own head, Niko is quick to get my attention and bring me back. During my search, an opportunity at Uber came my way. At that time, most employees were still working remotely. Fast forward to Uber’s return to the office where we adopted a hybrid work model—half office time, half work from home. Given that we’d moved into a new Chicago office during the work-from-home period, the office hadn’t yet provided reasonable accommodation for someone with a service dog, and a few essential logistics needed to be worked out. I was able to continue working from home full-time while Guneet coordinated to ensure I was set up for success by bringing Niko onsite with me. A few months later, Niko continues to work by my side in the office. He loves joining me but is sad that he can’t get pet on the clock (which is mutually shared)." - Dina Spurr, Tracking Support Agent

“As a blind person who can’t drive, Uber gave me the confidence and autonomy to be independent and not be afraid of traveling,” so when Chris Yoon found Uber’s Product Equity team, he jumped at the chance to work on a product that could “help so many others like myself and beyond transform the way they travel.”
“I joined Uber early last year as an in-person support expert at our Orlando, Florida Greenlight Hub. 6 months and a world of learnings later, I got the opportunity to transition into client success at Uber Freight as part of an internal mobility program,” shares Frances C. “It was a completely new line of business for me, but I took the leap of faith and also moved to a brand new city for a brand new job.” As events chair for our Los Ubers Employee Resource Group, Frances is championing opportunities for professional development as part of our global Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. “Currently, the representation of Hispanic American Talent in STEM is about 8%, so it is important to let others know that “Sí, estamos aquí”! (yes, we are here),” she shares. This year, Los Ubers curated career development sessions, from a career growth panel to a virtual networking session, where members can connect and talk about career journeys at Uber. “We also are encouraging our members to leverage internal mobility programs such as Gigs and Mentoring at Uber.”
