Vail Health’s Family Birth Center is undergoing renovations to improve patient care and the experience for laboring mothers, their newborns, and their families. The center will enable doctors, nurses, and staff to deliver state-of-the-art services in an attractive and tranquil setting.
Joe Drew, a nurse practitioner at Vail Health Behavioral Health, has been named the seventh recipient of the Vail Health Elevate Award. Vail Health created the Elevate Award in June 2022 to give patients and their families an opportunity to nominate and thank employees who have touched their lives in some way. Drew was nominated by Coti Chase. “Joe Drew has made a major difference just by listening and going from there,” said Coti. “Most doctors I’ve been to say, ‘no, we can’t do this’ or ‘let’s try this’ even though I’ve told them that doesn’t work for me at all. They still push it on you. Instead of doing that, Joe has been open to trying new things on what works for me. Personalized care. Most doctors have a pre-set medication of what will or won’t work for you before you walk in the door.” Drew is also very passionate about taking care of the underserved population and works at the Eagle County jail as a nurse practitioner. He takes pride in providing compassionate and non-judgemental care, and that approach is reflected in the experience for his patients. “It’s just really nice to be treated as a human and not pre judged as an addict before you walk in the door,” said Coti. “There’s a major stigma around addicts and addiction. Not with Joe. So, thank you Joe for simply being you and treating humans as human beings. It’s quite rare in the medical field and very refreshing. Thank you for personalized non-stigmatized care.”

In Edwards, Sally Welsh with Vail Health says construction will soon start on a new three-story mental health center designed for children and adults. "This is going to be a new 50,000 square-foot, 28-bed inpatient facility with 14 beds dedicated to adolescents 12 years and older, and 14 beds dedicated to adults," said Welsh. It will be located on what’s now a parking lot right off I-70 in a spot people looking for care now have to drive hours to find. “This facility will reduce the need for our community members to travel over two hours to seek this kind of care,” said Welsh. Work will start in the fall and go until the spring of 2025, and while there will be a number of mental health services offered, the focus will be on suicide prevention. “This facility will offer a multitude of behavioral health services, and crisis care will be the number one priority,” said Welsh

All people, including ROBOTS, deserve a break and recognition for their hard work. Vail Health’s robotic surgeons took the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System out to celebrate the successes from the past year. They walked around the hospital, grabbed some coffee and even worked on an art project. HINT: The da Vinci robot should probably stick to surgery. Since the implementation of the robotic surgery program, data from Vail Health shows a significant decrease in surgical complications, 0 site infections and a 75% reduction in opioid prescriptions. Vail Health’s robotic surgery program is just another example of how we are elevating health. Learn more: www.VailHealth.org/Robotics
