The performance benefits trickle down from a large pool, and sometimes it's difficult to understand why certain departments and teams get more bonus funding than others. I do not believe there's a publicly available explanation of how the bonus pool is split on a quarterly basis, which makes it a little less than transparent. Nonetheless, the bonuses are a nice addition to annual salary and is often used as an opportunity for managers to talk with individual employees about their goals, contributions, and competencies, because each employee's bonus is determined by their individual contribution to the company's success.
