I endured a very strange "phone" interview...from someone working 50 miles from the Extra Space Storage (ESS) store/location I was applying for. I felt like she was sizing me up FOR the manager who was actually AT the location where the job was located. Something was very "gamey" and off about the phone interview and I recognized this right away. Moreover, the person sounded nice, yet very rough and like she had been a smoker/drinker for 40 years and therefore I dumbed-down my interview with this "Whiskey Charlene" as a result. She described a very hard job, floating between three different ESS properties and cleaning and mopping (i.e. those huge hallways that we have all seen at storage facilities), sweeping out units, cleaning the bathrooms, etc. Do not apply here if you have multiple degrees or are overqualified (even if you are a hard worker and serious about getting a job). They will likely be too threatened to hire you. The whole ordeal felt like someone nosing around because they were "curious" about me and my "overqualified" resume and then the next day, "poof" the job was no longer available. This phone interview experience felt fraudulent and like borderline bullying since she had ZERO intention of hiring me and likely did not have the "authority" to be in the hiring role for "another" store in the first place. For the sake of transparency, this company needs to have the actual manager (where the employee would actually be working) conduct the interview (not someone 50 miles away). If not, she should have told me "what her role was within the company" and why SHE was conducting the phone interview on behalf of a property 50 miles away. It is cruel to waste sincere candidates time with nonsense like this during a pandemic. What a creepy experience.
