I applied online. I interviewed at Flexport (San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2018
Interview
Phone screen with HR. Phone screen with hiring manager. Hiring manager was about 15 minutes late to the call. Note that the briefing I was sent prior to this indicated that them being late to the call might be a test! A test of your willingness to be treated poorly by a company, it seems. I guess I passed, because I was given a homework assignment. Fine, but curiously, the instructions were to do the work in Excel. Now, this role ostensibly is to create a robust, scalable pricing data system. So why would someone's Excel skills come into play? Despite my gut feel that this is some ridiculous MBA Excel jockey garbage, I asked if I could do the work in Python, rather than Excel, which I thought would be a real plus. I did the work, but there was some missing data and some unclear instructions in one area, so I asked some clarifying questions. I received no response to my clarifying questions. They just ghosted me. If this review can prevent a great data engineering manager from wasting their time with Flexport, I'll have done my good deed for the day.
TL;DR: Hiring manager 15 min late to a phone screen, homework better suited to Excel jockeys than data engineers, company ghosted me after I did their ridiculous assignment.
