      City Planning Analyst Interview

      Jul 12, 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Chicago, IL
      Accepted offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 months. I interviewed at Groupon (Chicago, IL) in Mar 2011

      Interview

My interview was a long while ago, before the company went public, so I cant speak to what the process is like now. back then it was still a risk to take a job there, and it was all pretty unorganized. I had an HR phone screening 6 months before I actually got an in-person interview with a handful of people throughout the course of a few hours.

      Interview

Interviewed with HR for a preliminary screening. Very nice, energetic and enthusiastic culture voiced through the HR representative. Then met with three individuals from the City Planning Team over the course of two hours. Culture and company seem to be a great fit yet from what I gathered during the interview, the interviewers already knew who they had chosen as a fit for their team and continued interviews as due diligence. Felt like a waste of time but enjoyed meeting with them. Answered simple ROI and profit margin type questions, about four of them.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Groupon (Chicago, IL) in Sep 2011

      Interview

Their HR department contacted me about a week after I submitted my resume through their website to set up a phone screen. The phone screen consisted of basic questions like walking them through my resume and salary expectations and they also asked me why I wanted to work at Groupon. I passed the phone screen and an in-person interview was set up. The in-person interview was basically three 1 on 1 interviews back to back (one was with the person I would report to and the other two were people from other departments I would work with). The questions mostly involved topics and situations I would encounter on the job. They asked me basic match questions that were involved in calculating the revenue generated by a particular groupon (i.e. calculate total revenue, margin, and margin %) and they also asked me a lot of marketing based questions. These marketing questions revolved around things like different market segments and what each of these segments value in order to develop the best groupon for the merchant and the customer. I researched the company beforehand by reading a lot of articles on the internet, reviewing their website, etc and I felt I was well-prepared for the interview. About a week after I interviewed they contacted me and said that I was not selected for the position. I did have to send an email to them to prompt this follow-up but they did respond to me within a day after I sent my email. I think I wasn't selected because I had more experience than they were looking for and my salary requirements were higher than they wanted to pay (the job required 1-2 years of experience and I had a lot more than that). Overall, they were very nice and the whole process seemed as organized as any other interview process I've been through. There were a few miscommunications during the interview process but it certainly wasn't a complete unorganized mess like some reviews have portrayed it to be (most of the employees I interacted were young so small mistakes can be expected). In the end, I thought the people I interviewed with were all smart and professional and the office environment seemed like a good one. It was a good experience.
