I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Roku in Apr 2024
Interview
Long. Exhausting. Unprofessional.
1. Initial call with the recruiter - going over the CV, experience, why are you applying
2. Hiring manager interview - more about the role, the org and then experience in a more technical detail, expect random quickfire technical questions related to the experience
3. Engineering Manager interview - tecnical deep dive into the experience, expetct loads of questions around the technical stack
4. First coding test - Hackerrank 2 stage questions with one other senior dev
5. Second stage technical test:
5.1. Hackerrank medium challenger around algos
5.2. System design for a large social media app
6. Third stage chat with another dev, be prepared for quick fire coding challenge. I was told it will be just a chat around the tech and role but was given a coding problem and the chat followed up after that
7. Meeting with the program manager and discssing more about the role, be prepared to talk about your experience and to answer technical questions
8. Final interview with the group product manager, more chat about my experience and more technical questions about my experience and how it aligns with the role
Total of 8 interviews.
Be prepared for extra interviews being added on.
Be prepared to talk about your experience on a technical level in all interviews.
They would like you to work (if you even get hired) in the evenings so there is an overlap with the American team.
All of the technical questions are timed and under pressue to solve them quickly so they can move on to the next one.
From all of the technical tests and coding challenges, I did not manage to complete only one, but explained how I would solve it as I have solved it before. The interviewer was very intimidating and constantly made remarks about how much time we got. After the interview, on the next day I looked up the question on Leetcode and solved it. Goes to show how when candidates are treated poorly, they make mistakes.
After everything, I got good feedback and was told I am a good fit.
And then they ghosted me.
4 weeks passed and absolutely no reply. They are not saying yes but also they are not saying no, which was very hard to deal with.
After reaching numerous times and asking for status, at the 4th week after complete this absurd process, I was told I wasn't accepted as another candidate was a better fit.
Roku is hands down the worst company I have interviewed with.
They were stringing me along, not saying yes or no while seeing if other candidates might do better and they rejected me when they saw fit.
Another interview report said the exact same thing.
Even if you needed a job asap, going through all of the stages will take a long time and they do not make decisions fast so I cannot tell you to apply if you need a job, I honestly don't know how they even hire people, this absurd on so many levels.
Not worth the effort whatsoever.
