Applied on line via and ad they placed on Craigslist. HR recruiter called and we talked about my background and then we discussed salary expectations. Solarcity's offer was low, but within my range, so I agreed that if I was offered a position at $38K per year, I would accept it. The recruiter then told me he would contact the manager that I was to interview in person with and call me back to set up a time. Didn't hear back, then out of the blue three weeks later, the same recruiter calls again and starts anew. I had to remind him he had already interviewed me, but never called back as he said he would. We rehashed the same questions and then he finally comes to his point, "we cannot offer the salary we had agreed upon." Durr, why didn't you say that at the start, and this guy is supposed to be an HR professional? Anyway, so he offers a lower salary, but with 250 shares of company stock if I accept the position. I do some background on the company and their stock, call the guy back and tell him the offer is acceptable.
We scheduled an in-person interview for the following week and when I get to their offices, it's empty desks and no people when I walked in. Finally found someone to help me track down the person I was supposed to meet. Spoke with the Project Manager for about 20 minutes and the other Permit Coordinator for another 10. Everything went well and the PM told me the HR recruiter will contact me for the next steps.
HR calls again and tells me he's sent an email outlining the background check, drug screen and badging requirements - all of which has to be completed within 48 hours of receipt of the email. The email explains they entire process takes 3-5 business days to completely review after all steps have been completed. I get everything done in time and they send me copies what their investigation found. Drug screen - Clear, background - clear, driving record - shows my DUI from 3 years ago, which I had disclosed via the on-line application, nothing else on my driver's record. 10 business days go by and still no word. I call the PM I interviewed with and he says, "They told me 3 days ago that you were ineligible to hire." Did they tell you why, I asked. "they just said you didn't pass the background check. They didn't say what it was, just that you didn't pass. I'm surprised they haven't called you yet." I get the recruiter on the phone and ask him the same question, "Oh I just found out that you didn't pass the background check." What was it on my background that caused you to rescind your offer, I asked. "You have a DUI."
I tell him, I know and I disclosed that in my application. You still called and had me go through the entire process, knowing that I had a DUI. The job did not require a clean driving record or having to drive a company vehicle, so what gives? Despite all his stammering, he didn't give any additional information or answers, so I thanked him for wasting my time.
