I must have caught the HR rep on a bad day.
I was referred to a position by a Cigna employee whom I had worked with in the past. The position apparently reported up to her. My internal Cigna contact told me all the about the position: work from home, salary range, requirements, etc. It seemed very positive and like I had a very good chance with this role.
When I spoke with the HR rep during a phone interview, I got a completely different impression. She was not very friendly, and a bit standoffish. She questioned the validity and scope of my experience at times. She told me that the salary range that the 'manager' gave me was not accurate, which left me confused and beside myself. She seemed agitated and put out to be interviewing me. It was a complete 180 compared to how my internal Cigna contact hyped up the position.
The phone interview rubbed me the wrong way. It led me to believe that either the Cigna manager was lying to me about the position, or the HR rep was. Furthermore, the HR rep seemed annoyed that I she had to interview me. The entire experience with both the Cigna manager and the HR rep flipped the idea of 'networking' as a means of finding a job completely on its head for me.
