I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Thumbtack (San Francisco, CA) in Jul 2014
Interview
I was put in touch with the company via a recruiter and talked to someone from the company shortly after. We talked about the company, its engineering team, the role I would fill, and of course my qualifications and technical background. She was very polite and helpful overall. After that initial call, we assigned a date for a phone interview. The interview was done online via a phone call and a shared document/codepad.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
The question wasn't hard at all. It was to parse a mathematical expression provided as a string and output its result. I asked a couple of clarifying questions and proceeded to write a complete solution using the Shunting-yard algorithm by Dijkstra. After the interview, I executed my code and only found a couple of minor errors unrelated to the overall algorithm.

Interview
One round of recruiter call, the recruiter rescheduled the call 5 times (not exaggerating). when we finally got on the call he sounded unenthusiastic about the company, lots of sighs, even said that he's already in a friday mood (it was a wednesday). Asked me about what I knew about the company, I gave him a high level description, he made fun of me for not giving detailed enough info and not doing my research before the interview.. overall he came of as rude. will not be moving forward with them. He also seemed very stuck on the leveling of the position, this could be a good thing but I've never had a recruiter needing me to have the exact title from my last company, as far as I know, these titles mean different things at different companies.

Question 1
What did you know about the company, describe what has been `keeping you busy`

Interview
The entire interview process was straightforward and efficient. The recruiter was thorough in explaining the nuances of the role and steps of the interview process during our initial call. After the technical interview (online challenge via Hackerrank), he prepped me for the virtual onsite and made sure I felt confident and prepared. (I'm interviewing at several different companies and many of them don't even offer a prep call or guidance along the way.) This left me with a really positive impression about Thumbtack overall. I didn't receive an offer, but my experience throughout the process was positive and the recruiter said he would let me know if they other roles open where I might be a better fit, which I appreciated. Keeping my fingers crossed to hear from them in the future.

Interview
Not great. Would not recommend applying to this company but do so at your own risk. Person interviewing me seemed nice though. They did not seem to know what they wanted from me as an engineer.
