Someone I know was recently hired by USAA and, during her interview, she was asked how much she knew about the position she was applying for. She mentioned she had asked me (I do the same exact job for another company) about the position and what it entails. After her interviewer finished his questions, he suggested to her that I apply, as well. So, I did.
I submitted my app online and heard back from a recruiter about a week later. She sent me a link to do a personality test, skills test, and practical app test online. I completed the online tests at 1000 AM last Friday (May 14th), and the recruiter called me at 1020 AM that same day and asked if I could do a phone interview at that time. I could not, as I had a few meetings at work, so she offered to do a phone interview with me on Saturday.
The phone interview lasted about 20 minutes and went well, and at the end, she scheduled me for a face-to-face with the person who would be my manager at the Tampa campus. My interview was scheduled for Wednesday this week.
The face-to-face interview was probably the most ridiculous interview I've ever been involved in, though, for the record, I've had the same job for the last 7 years, so it's not like I'm interviewing every day. I only applied to USAA because I live 2 blocks from the campus (I drive 30 minutes to work to get to my current office). Anyway, my interviewer was horrible. She went over my resume, which explicitly states I've been doing the same job (insurance sales and service) in a call center environment for the past 7 years... and she still asked me if I thought I would be able to work in a call center environment. Then, after reviewing my resume and seeing the company I currently work for, she went on a 15 minute diatribe about why she hates the company I work for and how the employees at my company are below the level of the employees at USAA. She even went so far as to say the quality of the employees at my company is analogous to the quality of employees at Wal-Mart, and the quality of employees at USAA is analogous to the quality of employees at Neiman-Marcus. She also told me the actual people that work at USAA are just better than those that work at my company.
Needless to say, two days later, I checked my status on the USAA website and my status was changed from "interview in process" to "No longer under consideration". I'm sure at some point I'll get a form email from USAA telling me they have decided to pursue other candidates whose qualifications are better than mine.
I can't say that I'm at all disappointed though, as I would have had to take a pay-cut based on the salary I was given during the interview... not to mention, there is no way I would want to work for the lady that interviewed me. What I find amusing about the whole thing, though, is that all the while this lady is bashing the company I work for and our employees, USAA is sending us its members daily. USAA has a limited ability to service policy and when they are overloaded, or have members that are un-insurable based on their underwriting guidelines, they send their customers to my company. We have a business partnership with USAA, and yet this lady is just trashing us. Aside from the fact the lady obviously has no tact and no problem alienating people, she really doesn't see to comprehend that the company I work for helps out the company she works for.
Alas, it is what it is. I would caution you, though, about working for USAA. Some of their policies during the hiring process are asinine. I am a USAA member, which, for the most part, is only open to active military, honorably discharged military, and retired military. As such, when I became a member, they had to verify my military service to determine I was medically retired and served honorably. They asked me for my social, dates of service, and branch of service and were able to verify everything in a matter of minutes. Yet, when I applied to work there, they required me to send them my DD-214 AND fill out a records release for the VA to access my records... which makes no sense, seeing as they already have that information and it's part of my USAA member profile.
Again, if you have no job and are hired, obviously take the job. However, if you are gainfully employed elsewhere, I'd caution you about switching to USAA. You may be giving up a job you like for a job you'll end up hating.
