Description Cub Foods is the big bear in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, where it's The Twin Cities #1 grocery seller with about 40 stores. The regional grocery chain operates some 70 corporate and franchised location in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Its stores range from 60,000 to 70,000 square feet and some sell liquor. Founded in 1968 as one of the first warehouse-style discount food stores, Cub Foods was acquired in 1980 by food wholesaler and retailer SUPERVALU. While Cub Foods was the first to enter most of its markets with a no-frills format, it has since lost market share to big-box discounters, including Wal-Mart and Target. Still, Cub captures about a third of the Twin Cities market share.
