Clean Energy
Dominion Energy’s mission is to provide the reliable, affordable, increasingly clean energy that powers our customers every day. We’re committed to reaching Net Zero emissions by 2050, and we have made substantial progress toward that goal. We have dramatically overhauled our energy portfolio to include more low- and no-carbon sources through large investments in renewables such as solar, wind, and battery storage, as well as clean-burning natural gas to support renewables. We have cut carbon emissions 47% from 2005 through 2022, and we have cut methane emissions 38 percent from 2010 through 2022.
Offshore Wind
Our Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind commercial project is the largest offshore wind project — and the largest renewable-energy project — in the nation. When construction is complete in 2026, its 176 turbines will be able to power up 660,000 homes at peak output, and it will avoid up to 5 million metric tons of carbon emissions per year.
Solar
We have grown our solar portfolio from zero megawatts in 2013 to more than 9,000 megawatts in service or development — enough to power up to 2.25 million homes. We now have the second-largest solar portfolio among investor-owned utilities in the United States. We brought another 200 megawatts of solar on line in 2023, and have plans to add more in the coming years.
Nuclear
Our nuclear power stations provide 80% of the carbon-free energy in Virginia, 75% in our South Carolina service territory, and 90% in Connecticut. Nuclear power is the largest source of energy that emits no air pollution and the only one that can provide energy around the clock. Our nuclear fleet will continue to play a central role in reducing and preventing emissions.
Natural Gas
As we grow our renewable portfolio, we will continue to need on-demand resources to step in when the weather doesn’t cooperate so we can maintain the reliability that is crucial to our customers. Because natural gas is much cleaner than coal, switching from coal to natural gas has helped us reduce emissions while giving us the confidence to add more solar and wind.
Storage
We operate the second-largest pumped-hsydro storage facility in the world in Bath County, Virginia. We are adding battery storage to support renewables, and piloting advanced battery technologies that can discharge energy into the grid for much longer periods than current batteries can.
