Great Place to Work

Pros

Anthology has a great company culture overall. Teams are very supportive and helpful towards each other. The work we do is innovative, fun and interesting. I find the work/life balance to be easy to manage and really appreciate the ability to make good use of our unlimited PTO policy. Overall, it is a great place to work.

Cons

As with any education focused company, it is a challenging market to sell to right now. However, I think Anthology has done a good job of pivoting to fit market needs.

Pros

A handful of remaining employees are some of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with. Will probably make a terrific change management/org behavior case study at some MBA school in coming years.

Cons

At its core, this company culture is toxic, lacking integrity and completely artificial. Anthology is focused on curated appearances to drive sales rather than substance to drive client retention. This can be observed by top notch digital content (nice work, marketing team!) while client platforms go on for years with major unresolved defects and a six-figure conference booth while employees are handed $20-30k pay cuts. While I saw my friends’ companies supporting them through the pandemic, Anthology barely acknowledged the pandemic was “real”, pressured employees to travel at all costs and retaliated against high risk individuals, mothers and pregnant women who refused travel for the safety of their families. In fact, after a brief moment of silence for team mates who passed due to Covid during a division meeting, a senior leader went on to explain that getting in front of the customer is critical to revenue efforts and the expectation for the team. Senior leaders brought a new father on stage during a company kickoff in Texas to praise him for leaving his wife two days after giving birth and traveling to Texas in the middle of a pandemic to attend a company meeting. This show of loyalty against all odds is behavior they expect. The dinosaur platforms have been abandoned by talented developers and hard working employees who still exist are buried in 100-150 customers a piece, drowning to support their needs while the product crumbles and no one remains to fix it. After a mass exodus of employees, I anticipate a similar exit from remaining clients. I would not recommend Anthology to anyone with integrity in its current state. I sincerely hope the few remaining top notch employees are recognized for their work and that toxic leadership is let go so the company can salvage whatever is left. There are many companies in the higher ed tech space which will value you, treat you with respect AND provide a wonderful place to grow your career. Look elsewhere if you want to keep your career and mental state intact.

Anthology Response

Thank you for sharing your experience at Anthology. Employees and clients are two of the most important stakeholder groups for our business and meeting their needs is our top priority – whether that’s through providing excellent service to our clients or providing critical resources to support employees. We always appreciate opportunities to gather in-person and engage face-to-face, but employee and client safety comes first. We take local, state and federal guidelines into account when we set our travel and office closure policies. We are continually monitoring the COVID-19 situation in each state and region where we operate, including regions we have recently expanded to through our merger with Blackboard, prioritizing the health and safety of our employees and clients. Pros

Unbelievably the people who haven't quit or been fired are still very collaborative and positive.

Cons

Anthology greatly suffers from a fleet of VPs and executives that only care about one thing, cutting costs by any means possible. This has been shown countless times with the treatment of employees, lack of concern or care for existing customers, and archaic products that are consistently broken or significantly outdated. Ask ANY of Anthology's customers if their basic needs have been met since this acquisition. Feel free to also ask employees about our "benefits", "raises", or doing more work with less and less resources. Anthology likes to claim how "diverse and inclusive" we are as they fire local employees in Boca, Buffalo and Kansas City offices and completely replace them with global people at a lower salary. This has been done with multiple engineering teams and there are rumors that it will also impact front end development and customer support teams. Anthology is a top down organization where the rest of us can't even begin to guess how senior management's decisions can still negatively impact us anymore than they already have. Ask anyone about their 401(k). Be sure to ask a consultant about their billable hours and how their vacation time counts against that. Talk to the employees that had specialists in network for years, and today have to drive hours to be seen by one who now is. It really is sad to see how little care this company has for it's people. For example, the 1.4% merit "increase" everyone got in January. Incredibly talented people have left the organization with no change in Anthology's course whatsoever. In fact, just wait until we all go back to the offices and are surprised by all of the empty seats because no one in leadership recognizes anyone who leaves. I suppose it can be an office game where we guess if our former office colleagues were: Fired? Quit? or still WFH? I honestly do not know how this company could appeal to any organization in higher education.
