Pros

The people. Best in class individual contributors (well at least until they started getting pushed out or laid off).

Cons

Some of the worst leadership and strategic decision making I have ever seen in my career (and yes - I have worked for several "fast paced" tech companies and had no intention of "coasting"). Fear based, gaslighting, and a loyal little inner circle who unsurprisingly was untouched during the most recent round of layoffs. But I guess they still have enough money to go on a leadership retreat to talk about their "mindset"? The product is positioned and priced as SaaS but that's just not true. Customers are churning left and right in spite of calls to "go big" or "practice imagination". Every positive review you see on here is either done by someone in onboarding or someone in HR (since they clearly aren't listening to current/former employees to solve systemic issues).

The Story of BetterUp

Pros

There are three shining stars: the people, the customers, and the offering. But apart from that, this place is a total disaster because of the leadership.

Cons

Here's the story of BetterUp. It used to be a soaring success story, growing steadily for four strong years under leaders who were practically doubling its size annually. The atmosphere was electric, and the leadership was revered. Then, last year, Alexi's insecurities threw everything off course and he lost respect from the team. Feeling threatened, he went on a firing spree, axing pretty much anyone in leadership who didn't march to his beat. The whole leadership lineup got a makeover, and unfortunately, the folks who were driving the growth got the boot. Instead, he clung to the "yes people" who've been coasting along, contributing zilch for the past couple of years, simply because they nodded along with him. Result? Zilch growth, and the same old faces that continue to threaten everyone. Surprise, surprise – the company hit a growth plateau last year and didn't grow, and now, it's like a ship adrift with no one at the helm. Alexi's sticking with the same crew despite zero growth, no marketing, no head of sales, no strategy, no future roadmap, and a seriously toxic vibe in the air.

Gaslighting indeed

Pros

Unlimited coaching for yourself and a +1 is a really nice benefit. Many of my co-workers are awesome people that I like working with. Having a company-wide week long summer and winter break makes for a great time to decompress without feeling like you are missing something.

Cons

Leadership is all over the place. There is an incredible lack of consistency in vision and execution from the top. It's just thought leadership vomit. Leading by slogan that somebody read from some famous founder in a tweet. e.g. "hard is our moat", "feedback is a gift", etc. Everything will change month to month or quarter to quarter. There is no real sense of how to actually organize and operate the company or prioritize and resource projects. Anything that requires cross-functional work is a mess. You'll operate in this environment and then be evaluated on ambiguous "values" and "high impact behaviors". This is where the gaslighting comes in. Maybe you didn't "do less and deliver more" or exhibit "extreme ownership". There will never be acknowledgement that you weren't put in a good position to succeed. You just need to "get comfortable with being uncomfortable". Very sad bottom line quote I heard from a co-worker: "I've never worked somewhere that made me feel so bad about myself". That's pretty damning from an employee of a company selling "clarity, purpose and passion".
