Pros

People come to this company and stay a long time because it is a nice place to work. Management that I've worked for has been fair and the work is interesting. Benefits are awesome.

Cons

Not a tremendous amount of growth / training available.

Pros

Good people. The managed maintenance team I worked for handles problems with Emblem Health PPO software which is largely COBOL, CICS, VSAM. We enhance the system during the day and handle errors in nightly batch runs.

Cons

Too many late night calls. When I was on call, a typical week would handle 12-15 calls. On occasion we worked all night to maintain SLAs. Emblem is moving towards offshoring and away from the software we were supporting.

Pros

Incredible learning opportunities for young people or those starting careers in software development, consulting or project management. Challenging work, a huge variety of experiences that few other companies, larger and smaller, can offer to college grads or IT newbies. Seasoned, experienced managers (depends on location/account) Excellent if you are entrepreneurial & push yourself to seek out and take on new opportunities

Cons

Limited opportunities for career advancement. Great opportunities if you're just starting out, but career development tapers off and plateaus. The work experience and culture vary a great deal depending on where in the company you work, who your managers are, your role, what your account is, etc. You could end up with a stellar mentor, great skills building experience, or you could become someone's peon. Limited skills development and training. Company can be extremely stingy on instructional courses, books, training, etc. Your skills will go stale unless you maintain them yourself. Favoritism in the corporate office (for both people and pet projects) Core business is legacy systems - hard to develop skills or stay up-to-date if your day-to-day is on systems that are 10+ years old. Some employees are mediocre Low salary
