Pros

There are a lot of really great people that work for Coffman, the engineers and supporting staff are really positive, upbeat, and ready to make a difference. Coffman provides coffee, a fridge with snacks, and free breakfast. Coffman definitely provides a fun, hip, up-and-coming atmosphere, but it is all smoke and mirrors.

Cons

These cons are specific to the Honolulu office- Burnout is a constant. Young engineers are overworked and undervalued. Principal engineers work way too much as well, but at least they are compensated for their time in the form of large bonuses, company stock, and other free perks. Coffman is a revolving door. Use it to get your PE and then get out and make more money at a company that WILL value you. I find it comical the amount of reviews that claim "work-life balance". Most people are working late into the night and on weekends.

Very unfortunate that this was your experience at Coffman. We are not perfect, and it sounds like we need to make some further improvements. We are not simply watching and rewarding metrics, we are committed to being a company where everyone can thrive. We will continue to raise the bar of expectations for our managers and close the gap between who we say we are and individuals' daily experiences. I am sincerely disappointed to hear this. Not a good experience

Pros

I did not enjoy working for this company, I feel there are no pros to mention.

Cons

Some management, especially in the department i worked in, showed preferential treatment to certain employees. Don't plan to be given any significant responsibility or management role of any kind unless you are a woman. My boss regularly lied to you, didn't give me the chance to advance in my field, and ignored my requests as an employee for furthering my career. Be prepared to work many many hours of overtime and comp them all because you will have several months of sitting at home and not working. The best thing I did was leave this company and go back to my previous employer, thankfully they took me back after my lapse of reasoning made me take a job offer with this firm. The worst thing that happened to me though was being yelled and cussed at like i was garbage by my boss, in front of another employee. Sadly he feels that this type of interaction is ok, as I have seen him do it to others as well.

Super disappointed that you had this experience. Really difficult to respond without sounding contrived, other than we take a review such as this seriously and will be looking into what happened so we can correct and move forward, in alignment with our values and culture. I wish you all the best in your future. Sincerely, Dave Ruff - CEO/President.

Diverse and Challenging Work

Pros

Coffman values their culture, and works hard to maintain it at each office. One piece that I really appreciate is transparency. They do a great job of communicating their goals (both at our local office level and company-wide from the President/CEO). It’s nice to know not only where the company is going, but how I fit into that plan. They support professional growth and development, and provide great opportunities to give feedback for improvements around the office (from business processes, to project management challenges and even the free food that’s provided in the kitchen). The work itself is challenging and diverse, which I like a lot. There are opportunities to work on many different types of projects with different types of clients. They also have a great PTO/Comp time policy for overtime work (you can accrue hours), which is an added benefit during busy times like this

Cons

Nothing negative. It's a busy time in the industry and at times the workload can seem daunting, but that's true for most firms in our industry right now. Even with the busy economy, Coffman really supports taking time off to spend with friends and family.

Thanks for the encouraging note. As a leader, you get used to hearing that one thing is always at a deficit: communication. Honestly, this can be the biggest challenge. We as people need to know where we are going (and why) in order to have clear purpose. Clear purpose is imperative to maintain motivation. I appreciate that currently (from your perspective) we are providing enough communication to give clarity of purpose. Thanks for all of your hard work to help keep this train rolling.
