Pros

I worked at Lilly for several years but recently decided that I needed to inform others of the inner workings of how abusive and harrassing behavior is swept under the rug to keep projects on track.

Cons

I was a direct witness to a campaign of retaliation and harrassment that was ignored by senior management. A manager was extremely hostile to their staff members and eventually received an HR complaint. These complaints are confidential - however this manager shared the complaint with their staff in an effort to identify the individual that submitted it. Their staff then began to "investigate" the matter and started harrassing likely suspects. This culmulated in an off-campus encounter where a Jewish employee was targeted with anti-semetic language and had a drink poured on them - with a threat of "we know what you did and we're watching you." This event was widely known to management, but no action was taking because the manager was in a critical project role.

Pros

Good benefits, but expect less compensation as a result

Cons

Was intimidated and threatened by a senior member of my team as part of the new hire hazing process. I brought this up to my manager and she offered no sympathy and dismissed it, and HR told me that it would be more trouble to report it than it was worth. I did not receive any training or mentorship, and I did not have a single career development conversation the entire year and half I was there. My manager would constantly cancel our 1:1s and then ask me for an update on teams on my progress. The group I was in acted like a sorority, and would spend hours talking to each other instead of working and then complain about how other groups are not pulling their weight. Lilly is trying to move away from working from home as much as possible and is expecting a full return to office despite the feedback they’ve received from their employees. Most senior management works from home almost full time while those lower on the tier have to come into the office 5 days a week. Oh, super fun, I was told I would be on call when I showed up and being on call was NOT in the job description. My stress levels have significantly decreased since I left and my career (and salary) have already grown so much since my departure. BE WARY OF THIS COMPANY!

Pros

Benefits are great. You get 2 weeks free vacation from the summer and winter shutdowns and plenty of vacation time. Pay is generous even if it below industry average If you're in the right group, you can do interesting impactful work. Generally, your coworkers will be kind and supportive. Management does seem to care about people's well-being.

Cons

Your career will live and die by who your manager is and what projects you are assigned to. You'll notice the same handful of people get moved up the corporate ladder while everyone else stagnates. These are rarely the most talented workers, just the people who are good at spinning their BS. If you work on something outside one of the money-maker drugs, be prepared to hate your life. Your coworkers will be incompetent and/or contractors from India. Management won't care about you until your team inevitably make a mistake from being understaffed with no talent. Job duties are dictated by complicated SOPs that don't have enough information. Small number of people become invaluable because they understand how work actually gets done. Don't expect to do actual science here. All the technical experts have left Lilly years ago. You'll join focus groups that sputter until management has enough to spin to their bosses.
