Pros

Your experience at BKD is/will be completely dependent on your manager/coach. If you are in the good books of your coach, you will tend to have flexibility, and an advocate; and vice versa. The Dallas office is nice. Free snacks, coffee, tea, sodas, and juice offered every day. The administrative staff is very friendly. Co-workers are helpful if they don't see you as a threat.

Cons

1. Managers have their favorites. 2. Very very conservative, one of the partners even told me that to my face when I made some suggestions. 3. Sorry ladies, no short sleeves even in scorching Dallas summer weather (I told you they are conservative) 4. Every single day you have to respond to admin if you are working from the office or not, and where you are, and when you will be returning because the MP wants it so (it makes you feel like a teenager under curfew). 5. Pay is HORRIBLE 6. Turnover has been so high mostly due to pay. In one department, 4 people left within 4 weeks of each other, all were Seniors, Managers, and Senior Manager. 7. Very huge and super heavy laptops. The kind of laptops meant and recommended by Dell for stationary use, not for travel. Dell doesn't even manufacture those laptops anymore so you will be getting an old used one as a new hire. Ladies, forget about carrying a nice tote handbag as the laptop won't fit in it, unless you want to carry a 10 lb laptop plus your ladies bag. It seems like only the Directors and up get the 14 inch laptop. It is crazy. 8. One would ask why I'm I still here with all these cons, and that is because I want to have 2 years experience on my resume...almost there. And can't wait for the day I hand in my resignation, unless I see some of these cons changed for the better, which is a tall order for a conservative company like BKD. Honestly, I have never worked for a conservative company like this one, and I have worked for very big reputable companies.

Pros

To name a few, the wide variety of clients and the ability to take on responsibilities early on, consistent access/mentorship by the leadership team, a clearly-defined but customizable career path and great training/ support. Even though it's public accounting, I don't feel like I have to choose between my family and my job - I can flex my time and the leadership team trusts me to prioritize. I've seen a lot of positive changes in my 10 years at BKD from when I started, most of which have come from employee engagements surveys/ ideas from internal employees. No mandatory rotations means I can keep my family in one place, but we're big enough (and continuing to grow) that I could move if I wanted to. The ability to choose my specialization rather than be told where the firm needs me has been and always will be a selling point for me. For accountants, we're creative and strategic in how we innovate and I'm glad to be a part of it. BKD also really helped me to develop as a professional supporting my efforts in the community/ on local boards, etc. Non-discretionary Profit Share is 5% annually - better than a 401k match to me.

Cons

Standard cons with a pubic accounting firm - longer hours ahead of peak deadlines and an every-changing knowledge base in the industry can be stressful to keep on top of. While compensation adjustments seem to be in line with market standards overall, I'd like to see a performance-based bonus for certain milestones.

Mentorship, innovation, and work/life integration are all important aspects of our culture. We value our people and are always reevaluating how we can create a flexible working environment.
