Pros

The members are great and team members on a branch level are hard working

Cons

Canvas says they value work life balance and even added an extra PTO day for staff but you are blacklisted if you ever take time off for yourself, despite working 6 days a week and hitting all of your metrics. Most people are scared to take a day off because the only way you can achieve bare minimum living wages with this company is when you hit 100% of your goals all of the time. I did not know how appreciated my work was until I went to a different company. I left Canvas feeling worthless as a human. The regional managers talk behind each other's backs and about other managers to their team, no one is on the same page and it seems like middle management passed off everything they didn't care about onto us. There is opportunity to move up if you drink the Koolaid and dedicate every moment to Canvas. They like to talk about their high internal promotion rates but don't want to talk about their high turn over rate- people are not promoted because they are equipped for the job, they're promoted because they just need someone in the seat. Not to mention titles are created and given to the favorites. I have been forced to hire people that were not a top applicant because they were either a family member or significant other of a current employee, I have watched nearly every member of the CEOs family receive a job when some were clearly not qualified.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your experience working at Canvas. We often hear job seekers visit Glassdoor to understand better what it’s like to work at Canvas, so we appreciate the opportunity to provide a response. Based on your experience, it seems important to you to share your experience based on goals, referrals, time off, and promotions. We believe in work/life balance, which is why we provide a generous paid time off package which includes 3 weeks of PTO your first year (increases to four weeks at year two), helping hands pay, and wellness days. We regularly encourage our teams to utilize their time off, but recognize in some pockets of the organization, time off this past year, with the challenges associated with the pandemic and hiring, may have impacted time off. With that said, on average our employees used 126 hours of PTO and 79 hours of helping hands pay in 2020. We’ve established goals that align with our focus around member service, while still being attainable. We also regularly seek feedback on our goals, and have just recently reviewed and revised our goals/incentive plans to ensure they align with our member service expectations. Our culture is very important to us, and we strive to hire Canvas staff whose values align with ours. Our vision is; being known for our hearts, being known for our people, being a leader in the communities we serve, being a household name in those communities, and being known for our ease of use. Individuals who align with this vision, and believe that the best is yet to come, are an embodiment of our culture, and are considered for internal promotions consistently. The past year and a half throughout the pandemic has been very challenging for all of us. Many employers, including Canvas, have had higher turnover rates as a result of the current labor market. We are very focused on seeking feedback from our Canvas family throughout their career with us to better understand how we can positively influence retention throughout all parts of the organization. We are an organization that takes pride in helping our Canvas family learn and grow their careers. Feedback collected via our numerous surveys helps us grow, we openly share our opportunities for growth as well as celebrating those areas that highlight our dedication to continuous improvement. Our promotional process includes a competitive consideration process to ensure we select the best individuals for open positions. We strongly believe employee referrals are one of our best recruiting tools. We’ve had proven success throughout the years with hiring employee referrals. We encourage employee referrals from all Canvas family members, regardless of job title. Although Canvas may not have been the best fit for you, we do appreciate your feedback, as we are always seeking to grow and improve. We wish you luck in your new career endeavor. Canvas Team

Thank you for sharing your experience, and for the more than five years you dedicated to Canvas. We recognize that a tenure of that length represents a real investment — and that when that chapter ends on a difficult note, the experience leaves a mark. We're sorry your time here concluded the way it did, and we want you to know that the concerns you've raised are being heard, not dismissed. We take seriously the themes you raised around feedback, support, and long-term sustainability for branch leaders. Honest, candid perspectives — even difficult ones — are essential to our growth, and they inform the changes we continue to make across the organization. Through feedback from current and former employees, we identified areas within our branch scheduling model that required reassessment, as some expectations were not fully aligned with our cultural priorities. In response, we implemented adjustments to branch hours and scheduling practices to better support work-life balance and long-term sustainability. Canvas remains committed to listening through multiple avenues designed to foster open dialogue and continuous improvement — including leadership development programs such as Human Side of Leadership and Critical Thinking, monthly small-group listening sessions with our CEO through the Around the Table with Chad series, our annual All Team Engagement Survey, and the EthicsPoint hotline, a confidential, third-party anonymous reporting channel. We recognize that listening must be matched with meaningful action, and we remain committed to that work. Thank you again for your years of service to our members, teams, and communities, and we wish you well in what comes next.
