Pros

You will feel welcomed at first, as well as the feeling of camaraderie, at least for a while. Free lunch every Thursday. In-office gym. Healthcare, 401k benefits, etc. Company's actual products are pretty competitive in the marketplace. Greenville has "small-town" charm.

Cons

The location; Greenville is a college town with the population of around ~90,000. If you want to do anything besides the average college party or play video games at home, you will need to drive to larger cities close-by. Raleigh is about an hour and a half drive away, and Charlotte is about four hours. Although claimed as having a lower cost of living, Greenville has the same if not higher cost of living compared to the larger mentioned cities (PayScale.com). Non-competitive pay; Pay will be meager unless you are familiar with upper management, or hired on as a specialist of some sort. Most employee recruiting is aimed towards new college graduates that will be happy to have a job to begin with, so the odds of a competitive salary are slim to none. To secure a raise, you will have to practically work as an indentured slave, kiss up to higher management , or threaten to leave because of a higher salary offer somewhere else. The hours; From the start, you will be encouraged to go "above and beyond". To clarify this, you will be expected to work 45-50 hours a week regardless of productivity during your normal 40 hours of "salaried time". I stress "salaried time" as they will still track your hours via time clock as well as video monitoring (not kidding) whether you are salaried or not. Any time that you spend working over the expected hours, you gain brownie points with management, but not much else, as pay raises are based on poorly executed employee evaluations. High turnover rate(disposable labor); The company hires batches of employees at a time and cut the fat early on. If you dont make an impression right out of the gate, start looking for another job shortly after. If you move here before you start your job, you may face a difficult situation having to job hunt in Greenville if you find yourself on the chopping block. Power tripping management and other unprofessional points; The company mascot and name was an inside joke by the owner pointing out the quirks of computer nerds by calling them Grovers, essentially making fun of your employees. Unless you are fired, leaving the company can become a very sensitive subject. You may face legal threats even if you have not breached an NDA/ non-compete/etc, as it has happened to past employees. I suggest having your own legal counsel look over any paperwork you may be made to sign before you take any position.

Grover Gaming Response

Grover Gaming would like to respond with some answers and facts to the above review. 1. Greenville, NC is not just a college town. Greenville has many thriving industries outside of the college, such as Vident Medical Center which is the largest employer in Eastern North Carolina, and 20th over all in the state. A quick search will return many results for thriving industries in the area such as the pharmaceutical or manufacturing industries. 2. "Greenville has a population of ~ 90,000" this is also false. Greenville-Pitt County is centrally situated to serve the largest concentration of population and industry in eastern North Carolina (more than 812,000 people within 45 miles). 3. There are many things to do in Greenville, NC. Here's a quick video to show you some of the activities available to residents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo2cuA25rok 4. There are many areas of activities close to Greenville outside of Raleigh and Charlotte, NC. Greenville is situated 87 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean, and is also 157 miles from Richmond Virginia. 5. The statement that the cost of living in Greenville, NC is higher than Raleigh or Charlotte is simply false. Greenville is actually rated in the top 10% of Best Small places for Business and Careers (Source:Forbes.com July 2015) 6. The recruiting is not aimed at college graduates. As a matter of fact Grover has not hired a fresh college graduate in over two years. The only people Grover hires without professional experience is in the Quality Assurance department where they allow students to work part-time and learn on the job for a career after they graduate. 7. Everybody that works here is passionate about what they do and strives to truly innovate and put in the work necessary to make that happen. No one is expected to work 45-50 hours a week, although many people do because they want to improve themselves and the products they're working on. 8. Some people take pride in when they clock-in and clock-out, showing up on time, taking reasonable lunches, and putting in extra hours is accounted for and rewarded by management. If you were consistently late, took unreasonable lunch time, and always left early, we could see how you would have a problem with management tracking your hours. There isn't anyone here who sits around video monitoring employees, any technology business working in highly regulated gaming markets is going to have a comprehensive security system. 9. The company name being an inside joke by calling the employees nerds is also false. The name Grover Gaming came from the word Grow. Growing people as individuals and professionals. Then the art team proposed some logo ideas, the first of which was actually a dog. They choose the current logo to symbolize the fun tech environment they wanted to create. The original dog logo drawings are in the art room if anyone would like to look.

Pros

Co Workers are some of the best people I have worked with

Cons

Leadership is incredibly narcissistic and demands an almost cult like devotion to their specific desires, which change whenever the wind blows. They shove their religion down everyone's throat, expect everyone to memorize their company values and recite them at the drop of a hat or else be chastised. They preach the company is a family and fire people with little to no reason. They often gloat on how much overtime they can get their unpaid interns to work, while bragging about taking the company jet to places around the country to go gamble.
