Pros

Experience while in college and easier to maintain and get compared to internships. Allow flexibility in work schedule and continuous work. You can develop a close relationship with your PI.

Cons

Highly culture dependent and can have long hours as well as less professional boundaries because it is within an academic setting.

Pros

Some really great professors with a lot of experience and connections to labs, industry, government, etc. Research is highly relevant and world-class.

Cons

Some professors can be quite toxic or over-demanding of their students. Would recommend thoroughly researching PIs before committing to one for masters or phd. Also, NCSU has notoriously bad upper-level management. Huge delays in the bureaucracy result in PIs missing out on million-dollar grants. Although the professors may care deeply for their students, the people above them don't care at all and have no interest in listening to professors or students about how to improve the school.
