Pros
-Excellent hours. Perfect for working around kid's school schedule.
-Flexible schedule. I work on the days that I want and vacation anytime without asking my District Leader.
-The residents/clients are so thankful for our services. For some, this is their weekly outing and love meeting up with their friends in the salon. We're a great meeting place!
-We don't handle cash. All payments are by credit card or by prepaid account balance.
-No long hours. Most services are simple and no need to be too creative. Almost everyone wants a similar style- easy to maintain.
-Easy to transfer to new location if there is an opening.
Cons
Where to begin?
-Salon menu prices are way below going rate in town, even though I am in a very high-end community. This means that I am earning less than I was 20 years ago! The local ice cream shop pays more per hour than the Company for my location.
-No compensation for the employee if there is a no-show. It's very hard to locate someone to fill the spot within 10 mins. These folks don't move too fast!
-Only paid 50% commission. A manager makes only slightly more than a BTC employee (52% when BTC)with 3X more work which is often uncompensated (driving everywhere, gas, etc.) Depending on where you live (in CA, example), we get paid $18/hour plus 15-20% commission. I live in a very high rent location; hard to justify such poor pay.
-Employees are so underpaid, the area I work in even hired a felon to work in a salon! It takes months to hire someone because most people cannot afford to make a living working here.
-Company has no interest in retaining employees who build up so much clientele that the salon is open an additional 4 days/week and increased new clients by over 50%. Asking for a raise/increase in commission is met with "you should work more."
-Company fails to honor contracts with employees, like apprenticeships.
-Company supplies only beauty school quality products. New products are introduced, then removed from available inventory almost immediately in addition to going with a cheaper version of a product that is junk and difficult to use. I've asked for several products to make my job easier and safer for the client and was denied. So, I had to buy the products myself.
-At least at my salon, there are no intake forms for massage therapists or nail techs.
-Absolutely no incentive to stay working at PS when a salon out performs, increases clientele or outsells other area salons. No commission increase, free t-shirt, certificate of acknowledgment, no thank you or pat on the back.
-For non-management, training is limited to online training or a Zoom workshop for Paul Mitchell products. Initial onboard training is paid, but the Zoom training is not.
-Benefits are only available for upper management. BTC employees are not provided any benefits from the Company.
-The Company thinks very highly of itself. So much so, the website suggests we employees should promote the company by purchasing PS Salon swag at prices that amount to 1/3rd of my daily income.
-My past few District Leaders all came from outside of the Company. They don't seem to hire from within, probably because insiders know how little they would get paid and the stress is not worth it. My last few district leaders all quit within one month due to poor compensation for the work they were expected to do.
-We essentially are caregivers. The nursing staff will just drop off the client and we have to work through them not being able to follow directions, lack of strength to move to another chair, soiling themselves (happens all the time), trying to track down clients who are late or no-shows, not able to lay back in the basin. It's really hard and we never get trained on how to deal with this part of the job. We aren't allowed to lift clients but we do offer a hand so they don't fall.
-The Company doesn't care how qualified or skilled you are. If you're breathing and hold a valid license- you're good to go!
