Pros

Building some genuine and long-term relationships

Cons

Equinix sales is essentially a boys club. Higher ups refuse to acknowledge the immaturity and the outrageous actions that are done even by management. Equinix is a place where who you know will get you promoted no matter if you are qualified for the position. There is little to no room for women to feel comfortable to speak on what is taking place because fear of backlash and career suicide. I believe the company preaches way too much and management does not lead by example.

Thank you for this post. Although I am pleased to see that you, like myself, find Equinix to be a place where wonderful friendships and connections are made, I found your perspective on your work environment troubling and disappointing. Equinix is committed to creating a workplace culture where every employee feels confident in saying “I’m safe, I belong, and I matter.” Our new CEO, Charles Meyers launched this company value statement last year, and our Chief Sales Officer, Mike Campbell and I are deeply committed to making this a priority in our organization as well. That commitment has been demonstrated in actionable work and this year Equinix made several hires and promotions of female leaders. Equinix has also expanded training and awareness programs for managers and employees around unconscious bias, inclusivity and what it means to “belong” at Equinix. The Equinix Women’s Leaders Network has scaled to continue to grow global programs and activities for employees. In addition, we responded to employee feedback by officially launching the Equinix Pride Connect resource group to provide LGBTQ employees and their allies a place to connect, learn and grow together. That said, it is no secret that the tech industry still has a long way to go in diversifying organizations – especially across those areas that require more technical skills. At Equinix, we too are on this journey. As my team and I strategize about how to grow and scale to meet the business needs of our customers, we will continue to work with HR to help us build teams that are diverse and inclusive. I appreciate your candor around this important and sensitive issue, and I am sorry we did not have a conversation prior to your departure. I will do my best to represent your sentiment with my team and I wish you the best in your next opportunity. Sincerely, Dale Konrad VP, Global Sales Engineering

Politics and Backstabbing culture, esp. Marketing

Pros

Salary and stock are great for some jobs. There are also a lot of talented, fun people who work hard and care about their performance. If you are on the right project the work can be challenging and you could travel for fun events.

Cons

The management team is a nightmare. Leadership is asleep at the wheel, doesn't weed out problem managers, lets bad behavior fester. VPs are running functions with no experience in the kind of marketing they do. Bean counters and introverts don't inspire creativity and passion. Most managers are also totally uninterested in the well being of the people who report to them, are more worried about politics and their own best interests. If things get bad, managers will throw you under the bus to save their own necks. I've seen some really incompetent managers keep their job year after year and good, experienced people marginalized if they aren't spending time stroking the right egos. No one can get ahead if they are below director level. Do not come to Equinix if you are good and want to advance in your career, as you will never get promoted. If you are less competent and good at politics, know someone on the inside, and willing to brown nose every day then you might end up in a great job that you are not qualified for, and you will have job security for life. I know very few people who are truly happy in their job in marketing, which is a shame, since most of us deserve better.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. I am happy to hear you speak so highly of your colleagues, but—obviously—disappointed (and pained) to hear you express so much unhappiness with your experience in the Marketing organization. As “keep growing” is a value that means a lot to us at Equinix and me personally, it is especially hard to hear that you feel advancement is out of reach for certain positions. A significant percentage of our current employees received internal promotions through our annual cycle this year. In addition, the company overall began rolling out the Career Pathways program this year in order to deliver global consistency for career development, create multiple career paths for employee growth, and give tools for employees and managers to have meaningful career development conversations. We are currently in the process of bringing this framework to the Marketing organization to supplement our own departmental program called “Marketing on the Move,” that supports team members who might be interested in trying something new. Another value that we take very seriously at Equinix is “speak up, step up,” and I encourage anyone who feels unheard to please contact me directly as I would be happy to continue the conversation with you personally. —Sara Baack, Chief Marketing Officer

Toxic place to work

Pros

They pay well and provide stock options. Stock price is doing well, but long wait time on RSU vestments (4years). Currently the golden age of co-location with hybrid cloud, but this will decrease over the next couple of years as public cloud matures

Cons

Don’t buy into the hype the culture at Equinix is absolutely toxic. They love talking about “The Magic of Equinix” -company’s cultural tag line. If you find poor team communication, having your work and ideas stolen by your co-workers, lack of any career development “magical” this is the place for you. They love trying to position themselves as a technology company with-in the Valley, which is comical because they are a REIT and haven’t actually built anything. – Performance Hub and IOA marketing hype are not products. Arrogance and passive aggressive behavior rules the roost. Favoritism runs wild with key opportunities for career and skill growth doled out to the same individuals in key locations over an over again. Tons of job overlap with some teams primary job seems to be justifying their roles by piggybacking on others achievements. Very much a look at me culture with little regard for hard work and tangible results. Talk about yourself long enough and it must be true. Hybrid cloud has ushered in a golden age of colocation and Equinix is reaping the rewards right now, but it wont last. AWS, MS Azure, and Google are going to start taking a serious bite out of the colocation business in the next few years as companies move away from IaaS and into PaaS/SaaS and consuming services via the internet. As SD-WAN providers such as Megaport IIX console continue to mature their services Equinix traditional IX business will further erode customers will see little value in paying premium prices for colocation.
