Avoid at all costs

Pros

N/A, there are no pros.

Cons

Avoid at all costs. Icon is an extremely unhealthy work environment that starts at the top. Upper management has an old fashion boys club mentality which allows for and participates in verbal abuse. The goal appears to be to make employees feel inadequate and that they are lucky to work at this institution. Furthermore, upper management never changes their attitude since they are under the impression that Icon employees have no other employment options so there is no reason to change. Additionally promotions are not based on merit. Promotions instead are based on tenure or connections. It’s beyond frustrating to work for a company that does not acknowledge or reward employees that actually are performing at their job. Instead Icon offers “perks” such as free snacks. Free snacks are NOT enough and will not solve the deep cultural issues that persist at the company. There also are very few women in very high positions at Icon. For example, there are women who are running departments but only have the VP title. If an audit was conducted focusing on women’s titles and salaries in comparison to males, the results would be appalling. Snow days. Frankly I’m not sure why Icon bothers to send out text alerts. Every text alert that I received said ICON is open. Icon asks employees to either come into the office or take PTO. Since Icon does not have laptops, employees can sign on via VPN and work remotely but working remotely is not considered “acceptable.” Especially when there is the capability to work remotely, it’s shocking that a company would ask their employees to risk their lives to come into the office in a storm. Lastly, I have a hard time believing that the positive reviews are legitimate. It would not surprise me if HR was responsible for the positive reviews since those reviews conveniently seem to follow a negative review. Again the best advice I can give is to avoid ICON at all costs.

A Missed Opportunity

Pros

ICON is a good company for those who are looking for their first job out of college, or those who are looking to do the same role day in and day out and are not looking for career advancement. ICON provides flexibility from long lunches to being able to being able to focus on your family. The work/life balance is good compared to other agencies In my time at ICON I met many great people. Those people did a fantastic job helping me get through my time at ICON, and were the main reason for the three-stars.

Cons

People from ICON at the bottom are great. People at the top of ICON..... not so much. Promotions at ICON are spit out about as randomly as numbers on a roulette wheel. Managers and group directors push for their employees success. The problem, moving a brick wall is next to impossible. A lot of good employees during my time walked out on ICON because of this. During the interview process, companies will ask you "where do you see yourself in five years". When you ask that question at ICON, you get the look that bambi just ran in front of your car, because the answer is undefined at ICON for many. ***Also turn the up heat a bit... Employees are wearing sweaters and blankets in the summer time!

Toxic Work Environment

Pros

The people (not including upper management) are great. It's a pretty young office, so it can be a lot of fun. The friends I made while working here made it bearable and are a big part of the reason i stayed as long as I did.

Cons

ICON is not a real agency, so there are a lot of steps required to complete tasks that should be simple. There is very little creativity/interaction with clients because business often comes through other agencies who outsource work to ICON. It is very political and promotions/growth have very little to do with competence for the job. The office is also way too small for the rate at which the company is growing and they have resorted to putting up to five people in an office together and using former closets as work spaces.
