Pros

This is a company that is meant for people that want to excel. There is a ton of continuous training opportunities, great mentorship and a good group of people driven by the same values.

Cons

This is not a role or company for everyone - if you are looking for a clock in, clock out, just going through the motions type of role this is not it. This role is self-employment, it is hard work and you have to know that coming in.

Pros

Over the past 5 years I have been working with the firm, I have grown to understand more about how Northwestern as a platform to begin and grow your financial advisory business seems tough to beat. While NM has allowed me exclusive access to their insurance and investment advisory platform, they also are not captive to just their products and which helps me feel confident when doing financial planning. 5 years in so far and I have yet to run into a situation that I had to question any ethical or moral move that NM has made. With them acquiring learnvest to turn themselves into one of the largest tech financial firms in the US, I am excited to see where they go over the next few decades.

Cons

The first few years of building your own practice is tough. While Northwestern prides themselves on their training program and mentorship, at the end of the day, your business thrives or fails based on how much you are willing to work on crafting your skills and building your client relationships. I have seen a lot of people not willing to put the time and energy into starting their own business and end up leaving the career with a bitter taste because they were to focused on "selling" instead of "planning". If you are just trying to be an insurance agent or an investment advisor, this isn't the group to join. I have realized NM's focus and current competitive advantage is their focus on comprehensive financial planning that isn't just about selling products.

Pros

Friendly environment, fun events though they don’t pay bills. Those are the only pros.

Cons

This business runs on hiring people constantly (they don’t care about lying or withholding information) they tell people it’s for a financial advisor and the truth is you’re just a life insurance agent, that’s it. They hire you, grabbing your warm market(friends, family, known easy sales) you last maybe a year barely making any money, that’s why they hire college students because they are usually depending on their parents and making barely anything seems great for them. People successful in this business are the ones that follow the pyramid. Get hired then set up your own team so they work for you and they bring you clients through joint work. Their business model is literally based on hiring people to grab their warm markets, they don’t care about anything else, they expect you to quit hence they hire 4-6 employees every month. They will ask you to harass your family and friends and they’ll brainwash you by telling you what you want to hear, they withhold the truth on how you get paid as well. Just a lot of bs. Don’t work here if you’re looking for a financial advisor role. Go to an actual financial planning firm.
