What was once my dream job turned into a nightmare

Pros

Time off Flexible schedule The people on my team

Cons

I hope I don’t reach the maximum amount of characters listing the cons. When I first applied and accepted my position at OnDeck I thought this was my dream job and I was in this for the long run. That died quickly as soon as management made the decision to have two rounds of massive layoffs followed by a high turnover rate. Departments are thinned out and are taking on triple the work with the same pay. There’s no urgency to fill positions. There’s only so much we can take before we jump ship. They’re not doing much to retain the 5% talent that’s left. Everyone else including management is clueless and does the bare minimum. The best part is receiving a link to fill out a survey as if that’s gonna help boost morale and change how management operates. OnDeck has hit an iceberg and is slowly sinking. They had a chance to recover from the layoffs but forgot about taking care of the people in house. Focusing on profitability instead of its employees is what got OnDeck to this point. It’s time to close up shop and move on who are you fooling. I’m no longer motivated and well on my way out the door.

Pros

Free lunches, Not much else.

Cons

No advancement potential. Company is a sinking ship since the IPO management overhaul. Very non-competitive salary for most departments. HR is a mess. Political nightmare like a previous reviewer stated. Cronyism at it's finest for upper level positions. Company-wide lack of communication across all teams/offices.

Pros

There are a lot of smart, friendly people who genuinely want to do their jobs well and collaborate to get things done. There's a good amount of snacks, drinks, coffee, and tea. Every now and then there's either free breakfast or a happy hour. The dress code is casual.

Cons

Unfortunately, there are quite a few people here who make you want to bang your head against the wall and then drive yourself off a cliff every time you have to speak to them. For all the talent that there is here, there are also a ton of people who are still around and getting promotions purely due to tenure. These people who have been here for years have no basic understanding of any of the existing systems and are not held accountable for doing their jobs well, but they somehow get promoted every year because they've been around. Management has no idea who is actually doing great work and who isn't; they reward those they hear yell the loudest and barely glance at those who get the job done without the politics or the drama. Exec and the People Ops team here has not done anything to retain people after 2 rounds of layoffs, leading to a massive exodus of talent over the past 2 months. A lot people who were key to the success of the organization and had strong knowledge about our business and our platforms have left.

The first half of 2017 was a really difficult time for OnDeck and we lost some great talent. However, we’re now at a real pivot point as an organization. We’re closer to achieving our financial goal of profitability; we expanded our collaboration with Chase for another four years; and we recently celebrated our 10-year anniversary at town hall, hearing long-tenured team members share fond memories from our company history as well as their optimism for the future. While the changes we have gone through this year are difficult to navigate, I would respectfully disagree with your characterization of the overall trajectory of the company – we are much more stable financially now than we were a year ago, and we need that foundation to allow us to innovate in the market and grow in the coming years.
