Pros

Fabulous campus, great art all around, no risk of getting fired, work with some great people.

Cons

Very successful two years of working remote and it won't even be considered, so staff is leaving for remote work opportunities. Annual pay increases are laughable (median 2%) and far from inflation rate, so you lose money each year working here - so people are leaving for better paying opportunities Parking is terrible and they threatened to charge for it to discourage commuters - it wasn't a problem during the pandemic when people were working remote - but they want everyone back full time and won't consider even part time rotating remote work. To make it worse, they are destroying parking lots to build new buildings, so it will get worse (even with new garage being built) Career advancement training is minimal and internal training is poor IT Support is understaffed, but won't expand on departments, so become ticket grinders. Nobody retires and people are rarely promoted, so there is no growth opportunity. Coupled with the fact that you have no time to expand your skills because you are constantly grinding tickets - you have to leave to get a promotion It really sounds like I have an axe to grind, especially with the remote work stuff, but really this place has just worn many people down over the years. Remote work was a breath of fresh air and people are jumping ship (I see it everywhere)

Pros

- Students are dynamic and motivated. You can work collaboratively with them - Benefits are great! - Campus is small and you get to meet many other professionals and colleagues - Commitment to social change and financial support for students and staff

Cons

- There's a loyalty and culture of micromanaging. An unconscious perception that "you should be grateful to work here." - Lack of work-life balance. It depends on where you work. Don't expect work-from-home. Many people don't like it. - Old school with old ideologies. Power dynamics can interfere with decisions and speaking up about concerns. "Stay in your lane mentality" - Stuck in the idea that 2019 students and culture are the same. Not considerate of new workplace values and change in the world of work.

A very mixed bag

Pros

Benefits are excellent. Non-corporate environment. Depending on where you are, you may or may not get to interact with students or visiting luminaries.

Cons

The institution is stodgy and behind the times in a lot of ways. We've just come through a pandemic with 5-day/week work from home, but that won't be allowed from now on even though it's been very successful. There's little to no concern that this decision means staff will leave. HR policies are outdated--very top-down structure with little to no recourse if you're at/near the bottom (and HR is unhelpful unless you're in management), so if you're saddled with a terrible manager, there's nothing you can do. Real reluctance to move with the times as an employer, while simultaneously claiming to be at the forefront of everything. The culture in some departments is great; in others it is downright toxic, and no one seems to care, because the university believes its own propaganda. The most recent staff survey was frustratingly superficial, designed to ensure that the results confirmed that everything's just great and nobody needs to change anything.
