Pros

You meet some good kids and good staff members at host schools.

Cons

*No accountability from the Scoot staff. During the interview, I was told that I would have consistent work, but that wasn't the case. My consultant would claim it was due to my preferences of grade level and whether or not I was a car driver or bus rider, which wasn't an issue during the first half of the school year. *They don't understand that employees have to work in order to pay things like rent and bills. You'd go for weeks without work. *You would come across unruly students, which gets worse as you go into middle school and high school. *Scoot Education mainly works with KIPP Charter schools and some staff at these host schools won't be as helpful as they should. Others will be available. *I learned that Scoot Education hired more staff during the second half of the year and consultants will 'give a chance' to those new hires by giving them hours and not those already hired. *There is an inconsistent schedule: You may be working around three to four days in the first half of the school year. Then less than three days the second half. Maybe weeks without work. And the Scoot staff will make excuses, possibly blame you for the lack of work.

Pros

Make your own schedule, but that is with any substitute teaching job regardless of the company. Subs choose to be subs for the flexibility.

Cons

When I was first hired I was told I would be working in my city of residence. They told me the area I live in is a GREAT place to be a sub. However, they only call me for areas that are too far from my home. I brought this concern up with Jordy when he sent me to a location I KNEW was too far (being born and raised here I know of an area is out of my reach.) he responded in a condescending tone and told me ALL the other subs go that far and I should have no problem doing that either. Feeling belittled, I took the assignment. Of course I was right and it took me almost two hours to get home, interfering with priceless family time with my children. I had to have someone pick my kids up for me. I again asked about subbing in my area and they responded "we actually don't serve that area because there's no charter schools" THEN WHY did you tell me I would be working in that city!? You baited and switched me to get me in Los Angeles. After talking with other scoot subs I found this is a common practice they do. BEWARE IF YOU ARE TRYING TO STAY CLOSE TO HOME. Also, charter schools run LONG days. Stick with the school districts if you're trying to sub. Another thing is these classrooms are COMPLETELY unmanageable, I've NEVER seen such horrendous behavior and I am a seasoned teacher. One more thing (notice how this list keeps going?) don't call subs when they are not working. I also don't appreciate getting emails saying make myself available as often as possible...if I wanted to be available as often as possible I never would've quit teaching full time to be placed in unmanageable classrooms only to be mentally and verbally abused by students.

Scoot Education Response

Thanks for your honest feedback. We're disappointed you didn't receive an experience you felt promised. We invite you to call us to discuss or email us at la@scoot.education. We do our best to accommodate subs geographic preferences, however our ultimate goal is to place the right teacher in the right classroom. Sometimes a substitute assignment requires a specific credential or experience level, and we prioritize students success over proximity. However, we have no minimum work requirements and all subs are welcome to decline work that doesn’t suit them. Our school’s substitute needs vary and at the time of your hire, it's very possible we were in high demand in your area. If you contact us then we can look into exactly what’s happening your area to provide a more complete explanation. As for the isolated incident you mentioned, we hope you feel empowered to decline a proposed assignment if it interferes with your schedule or geographical preferences. LA traffic is tricky and I can imagine the frustration of having to arrange pick up for your kids. We pride ourselves in partnering with all types of schools across LA and charter schools are one of our largest partners. At Scoot, we're eager to work with substitute teachers who understand the complexities of the student populations they serve and show up with compassion, empathy and kindness. Only you can control what happens in the classrooms we send you to, but we work hard to work with stellar substitutes who understand the education system isn't perfect but are still willing to show up whole-heartedly to create exceptional classroom experiences. In terms of setting your availability; we do NOT have a minimum availability requirement (you can work as much or as little as you like) but we do ask you to keep your schedule up-to-date so we don’t bother you when you’re not available. Doing that makes life easier for you and us which is why we contact our subs to remind them to update their schedule. You have a Consultant in our office who is available to discuss your preferences and we do our best to comply with them. We encourage you to contact your Consultant so they can help solve these issues. We love hearing from our team of subs ☺

Pros

The reason why I didn't give this a full blown 1 star rating was because some of the people I met working at Scoot. Scoot definitely had a fun energy and drew great people in because of its culture. Meetings were fun and outside work activities were encouraged by management. In some ways it felt like a family. which probably made me trust Scoot more than I should've.

Cons

I want to be as direct as possible here, because they make you write a positive review once you get in there, when you're happiest at Scoot. Management focused on growth in other territories rather than their existing employees. Low salaries, made it impossible to get a raise. Very numbers and bottom line driven, not based off of work ethic/output. Favoritism. You could clearly see who management liked and they would get promoted faster than others, as well as were treated better. Political. Made it seem they were a startup with fresh values, but secretly functions like a corporation. Nice to your face, but gives you no chance once they made up their mind about you. You're ousted before you're aware. Sexist/colorist management. In my time there I saw more white men become part of the management team, and despite there being more women around, most of them were white, or white-passing. It was frustrating because management claimed they were doing the most to have D&I teachers, which was true, but it did not reflect on the team. I saw the feedback given to women had different tones and feedback, at least from my 1 on 1 conversations with them. Constant uphill battle. Constantly felt I had to prove myself, even if I had no control over the outcome. It was embarrassing after a while. I felt I had to prove my value and positive feedback was rarely given, if ever. Shady. People would mysteriously quit without any inkling of a reason why, but after talking to them after the fact, they were bullied into quitting. Elitist. I'll stop there.
