Pros

Large global company, recognized brand, cutting edge products, interesting work.

Cons

Company execs don't care about employees; all the positive rhetoric is solely to get employees to work hard toward company goals so that the execs can continue to get their large bonuses. They just announced internally (after telling the public that they met goals for last fiscal year) that salaries are being frozen because of "macroeconomic conditions" and the need to operate leaner and control/reduce costs, so that there will be the possibility of a bonus pool next year. They constantly re-org management and are reviewing product lines and staffing levels. Our managers have already been told that there can't hire in the U.S. and that any headcount replacements or new hires (if any) must be done in India. Employees are finding themselves in the position of hiring and training the people who will replace them. Execs are building more and more offshore teams and shipping our jobs there. They are cutting internal IT projects, asking people to curb WebEx use for cost reasons, etc. The coming months are shaping up to be bleak ones for employees and their families. Lots of uncertainty, which is just business as usual in high tech companies these days,

Pros

The benefits and pay at Seagate are good. Work/life balance is also good. Very flexible schedules, and opportunities to work from home (depending on your position). Technically, I think there is a no work from home policy, but in the real world, most managers don't care because they do it too. Also depends on your specific position and boss. Unlimited vacation (if approved by your boss) is nice... assuming you have a good boss. Onsite gym, standing desks, and cafeteria at Longmont are decent. Looks good on your resume.

Cons

Very nasty office culture / office politics. People tend to take a very passive aggressive approach to conflicts instead of trying to resolve them in a constructive way. Lots of gossip and under-the-table back stabbing. Lot's of managers who are more interested in using their employees to advance their own careers or protect themselves than taking care of their employees or team. There is not a lot of inter-company mobility, and you can get locked into your job and have your skillet silo-ed. Office layout is a giant cube farm. There have also been lots of layoffs the last few years, although rumor has it these will soon be coming to an end. From my perspective, layoffs seem to be affecting a lot very senior level employees who have been at the company for a long time and are not necessarily up to date with the latest skills. I have not heard of a new hire being laid off immediately from where I am in the company. Not a good position for a highly-motivated engineer... I have never worked at a company where taking initiative or trying to learn new skills was so frowned upon. Managers just want to keep you in your place so you don't cause trouble. Maybe a good company if you have no ambition, want to smoke weed (I was not drug tested as a condition of employment), and just want to coast through life.

Pros

Excellent co-workers. I had a really good direct manager. Was able to work from home a couple of days a week, which offset the number of nights I needed to work with Asia. I loved my job and the variety of responsibilities I had.

Cons

Great people worked here. Yes, that is in the past tense for a reason. MANY, many very excellent employees have been let go in the past 5 years. The majority were long time and loyal employees. RIF after RIF after RIF... we kept being told that the last one was the last, then they RIF'd again. Management keeps getting richer with salaries and bonus payouts, while no or minimal raises given to employees. Bonus payouts had restrictions on performance of company... no such restrictions on Executives or Board. New CEO made it quite clear he hated IT and would get ride of almost all of it in US... and he did with the backing of the new CIO... the CEO basically forced out the prior CIO.
