Worst company I ever worked for!

Pros

For the most part, the people working as staff or as drivers at the bus terminals are decent, honest, hardworking people who genuinely care about what they do and who are committed to delivering children safely to and from school. The corporate sales team is also a decent, smart group of people.

Cons

If there were a list of "worst companies to work for" to compliment all of the "best" lists, NEC in Warrenville would be tops on any list of shame. The management team is the most incompetent group of people I've ever seen - they're like a bunch of children play-acting what they think grown-up business people should act like, with all of the wisdom a bunch of kindergarteners would amass. The only executive who has enough skills and experience to get another job is the head of sales, the rest would be out on the street if not for NEC, and they know it. This insecurity combined with lack of business smarts makes for a lethal combination. There's no strategy, and the culture is one of backstabbing and weak people doing whatever they can to hold on to their jobs. If you've ever read the book Animal Farm, this management team is just like the pigs. If you're a high performer, you'll be quickly isolated and shot down - bosses are too afraid of getting surpassed by their underings. All employees get evaluated using the same one-page form, from bus drivers through execs. If you paid $$$ for your college degree(s), you'll not want to be rated on irrelevant measures that neither reflect your job responsibilities, nor will give you any feedback to grow, This place is full of toxic deadweight and the lowest quality of employees I've ever seen. My boss was the nightmare trifecta of jaw-dropping incompetence, utter stupidity, and malice - she had a 75% turnover rate of her staff in less than 2 years and was obviously a total waste, yet managed to hang on to her job. And when I say stupid, I mean like within a standard deviation of mentally disabled. No doubt she was kept on because there was zero chance of her showing up her boss, who attained her own title strictly through tenure and climbing up on the backs of other people. To get the execs their fat bonuses, the finance dept stopped paying vendor invoices in order to meet the co financial goals. They also held a big conference in Las Vegas, then said there was no money for raises for the workers. This is a scummy place - stay far, far away from this cesspool - even if you're unemployed and are desperate for a job, stay away! This company specializes in preying on people like that, and will use it to their advantage to cut your pay and abuse you - then say you should be grateful to them for having a job. If you still work there, and hate it, then get out - there's no time like the present! It will never get better.

Pros

None. There are no pros to working at NEC. Corporate Culture is very poor. US Corporate and Operations Finance leadership are basically both incompetent and have no qualms throwing Senior Financial Analysts "under the bus" to avoid taking responsibility for their own leadership mistakes. Average shelf-life of a Senior Financial Analyst "team" member at the company right now appears to be about 6 - 9 months, on average. After that, person is fired and replaced with somebody else.

Cons

Leadership team of NEC is extremely "cliquish"; not terribly self-aware and would not be qualified to hold similar stature positions in other industries. Putting incompetent people in important jobs is a good recipe for accounting/earnings manipulation...which is essentially what the US management team does to "make the numbers" and meet UK parent company expectations. Corporate Finance team is especially poor, in my honest opinion. Being effective in Corporate Finance is about partnership and dialogue. It's very hard to "partner" with other parts of the company and do your job when the rest of the company thinks that you are "Ivory Tower" buffoons and doesn't really want to talk to you. If you have to constantly remind the operations people in your company that you were an "Investment Banker"... it's a pretty good indication that you are not very good at your job and don't have their respect. I am no longer an employee (thank God!); however the straw that broke the camel's back for me with NEC was: 3 months after I left the company, I heard company fired a Senior Financial Analyst who had only been working there for about 4 months and was still "clambering up the learning curve.". His wife was 3 months pregnant at the time. I called him up and confirmed it myself. That is a verifiable fact and is a whole new level of inhumanity that I have never come across in any company I've worked for. If you are looking for a good job to advance your career... look elsewhere. There's no increased professional stature to be had from: holding a poor job, in a dying industry, in a company with poor culture and where there is a high risk that you will be fired before you hit your 12 month anniversary. No one is going to look at your resume years from now and say: "You worked in Corporate Finance or Operations Finance for National Express Corporation. Impressive.".

Pros

None, it is an unbearable place to work. This is in reference to the Warrenville, IL office.

Cons

The turnover throughout the company is unbelievable, especially in the finance/accounting team. Management are not role models. Very disorganized assignments, fire-drills, and requests lead to useless long hours. Management will throw you under the bus to advance their career. You are set up to fail. Very hard to respect management, especially in finance.
