Pros

I’m really trying to think of any, and I’m having a hard time. I guess the only thing that comes to mind is that it is a relatively stable job regardless of the department you’re in. If you love soul sucking corporate work then you’ll love this place.

Cons

The company is the most uptight and conservative place I’ve ever worked for or heard of. You can’t get anything done without getting approvals from so many different people and their boss’ boss etc. The older generation is so stuck in their ways at this company, which is the vast majority of the employees. This is why it’s near impossible for any positive change to happen here and almost every aspect of this company is outdated. The pay is mediocre at best and the PTO is a joke. You start out with 2 weeks (10 days) of vacation time and don’t get an increase to 3 weeks until you’ve been with the company for 5 years! The work life balance feels non existent. The health insurance isn’t bad but it’s not great, especially given the fact that they’re an insurance company. The dress code is very strict as well. No jeans ever, unless you pay $5 for some fundraiser they do a few times a year. What a treat, you get to wear jeans to work if you buy it!Wow! The technology is extremely outdated. IT is the biggest department in the company but yet they can’t seem to get with the times. If you’re coming from a place that uses best practices and industry standards you will have to throw that all out the window and be prepared for no one to know what they’re doing and start using outdated methods and technology. The company is too big for its own good. When you have to seek approvals from so many different people to get anything done, you end up just feeling annoyed and defeated trying to do your job. It feels like they have so many unnecessary positions and you’re not sure why so many people have to be involved in what should be a simple process or project. The actual headquarter’s interior is extremely outdated and most of the office furniture is from the 80s. The most drab and depressing looking workplace you can imagine. They’re trying to update different floors with new furniture and construction but I’ve heard nothing but complaints about making the cubes and workspaces smaller and more cramped with little to no privacy. So the “improvements” they’re trying to make aren’t even improvements. Overall there is just an overwhelming feeling of uptightness that makes you feel on edge all the time. There is a way to be professional yet progressive and keeping up with positive change in the workplace. I’ve heard that they’re having a hard time getting younger generations to work at CIC - no wonder! A company that is stuck in the past isn’t going to be attractive to anyone younger than 40. For being such a big company, they can do so much better in every single way, but they choose to stay in the past and are extremely resistant to change. Just get ready to work for the most depressing and soul sucking company if you’re hired. I would never recommend anyone work here if you want to feel any sense of fulfillment or happiness in your work.

Pros

As long as the founders had the power & control, this was an ideal career. As a Field Auditor, the fact the Home Office was 450 miles away was irrelevant. This was due to the fabulous Home Office Support. The communication between, our department reviewers, the I.T. Dept., Underwriters, etc. made it possible to be successful in the field.

Cons

2011 The last family member retired and the company hired a CEO, from outside of the company. I have been living with change, every day of my 19 years with Cincinnati but, after the new leadership took the power & control away from individual departments and put Human Resources in charge of generating reviews and other decisions, I became only a clock number. It is no longer the company I was proud to represent.

Pros

-Relaxed Atmosphere -Room for advancement after 18-24 most -Some good learning and development programs -Good 401k match and stock program -Nice People -Flexible Hours -Work from Home once a week -Good for people trying to get into business from other sectors like teaching

Cons

This place is in the Stone Ages in almost every way. I would especially not recommend this company to a recent college grad or to a millennial coming from another workplace. Daily I was expected to do my job using programs that ran on Windows XP or 98. Expect long delays while working due to programs taking several minutes to load simple items. If you complain about the technology, you will be met with "this is how it is at every company" which from past business working experience I know is not the case. They will also want you to work faster but the technology makes it difficult to stay focused on your tasks. You are going to learn few skills that are going to be valuable outside the company or other insurance jobs. Most of the work I was doing is going to be automated soon (whenever they can get their act together) and a lot of it was data entry. Even though the job was pitched as being more analytical. Definitely doesn't require a Bachelor's degree and you are not paid like you have one. Do not expect to use any of the skills you learned at business school at this job. Work is extremely solitary; very few opportunities for collaboration. If you like talking as a part of your work at all do not work here. Work is also very menial and monotonous. Expect to do the same exact thing everyday. Culture is stuffy. Most people are afraid to talk. Dress code is very strict and basically business professional without the jacket and tie. Very little room to be creative or have a personality. Pay is extremely low for everyone except the actuaries. Expect small raises and bonuses even though financially the company is doing better than ever. The somewhat generous stock options and Company Day once a year is not enough to justify such low salaries. Lots of turnover due to being overlooked for jobs for no reason and other insurance companies in the area paying more. While working there they started hiring people with less experience than I in positions higher than mine and with better pay. I was told by management that this happens often here and to just deal with it. Having to wait 18-24 months for a promotion makes it difficult to move above these new hires. I saw people with MBAs making peanuts and not given much opportunity to advance. Long term, not sure if the business model is sustainable. People don't think about going to their local insurance agent anymore. Everyone says that jobs here are stable, but with growing automation and the rise of digital insurers they might not be so stable for too much longer.
