Pros

It is painfully easy to tell which reviews are genuine

Cons

Dear Applicant, I know why you’re reading these reviews, so let me start out by answering your main question. Do not come here. Why do you want to? Because it’s a part of Alphabet? Because you think it will be like Google? This isn’t Google. The compensation is average, any perks are rolled back on a regular basis. The culture here has reached a level of toxicity that is cartoonish. At Verily you are either stabbing someone in the back or are about to be stabbed yourself. If that sounds strange to anyone, I’m sorry but your manager is about to schedule a talk, you have just been escalated. People here think their life is like House of Cards and while they may resemble Kevin Spacey, the reality is closer to Mean Girls. More will be said behind your back than to your face. We communicate solely via escalation here. You will be escalated frequently. Escalations fly freed from the burden of proof, rationale, or consequence for the issuer. DEI does not exist here. This is not the place for members of historically marginalized communities. Bias and prejudice are allowed to flourish in this culture. Do not come here. Projects are hilariously understaffed and the product is both undercooked and oversold. Are you hoping our reputation will do something for you? Expect to be disappointed once you hear what our customers think of us. You will be expected to hold multiple roles, across major projects, without any support. Senior leaders will appear just in time to take full credit for your work. You will work late nights, you will sacrifice weekends, and in the end, you will clap for someone who doesn’t attend any meetings. You have just been escalated. Applicant, do not come here. Do you believe in the mission? Is that why you applied? We are proud of it too. We are happy to state that we improve people’s lives while creating a mental health crisis behind our own doors. I have seen people leave (without other work secured) just for the sake of their own wellbeing. I have heard friends confide that they are close to the brink. I have watched the sick glee on the faces of hate filled “co-workers” as they twist the knife. On Sunday night you will experience the kind of feeling that some people don’t survive. Don’t you have other options? How long can you stay unemployed? Doesn’t your college roommate owe you a favor? Haven’t I answered your question already? Do not come here.

We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. Trust that we are listening! We are in the process of big moves and our goal is to create an environment where people collaborate, support each other, and enjoy meaningful work. It sounds like this hasn’t been your experience. We encourage you to speak to your manager about your concerns so we can address them together. We'd love to connect your feedback to the Verily People and Culture Team, and hope you'll email us at “verily-PACT@google.com.” Your feedback can then connect to others' feedback as we continue to build and improve Verily as one of the great places to build your career.

Pros

The company is doing really cool stuff that will have great impact. It's rewarding work.

Cons

The culture could use improvement, but the biggest pitfall is that the leadership treat their employees horribly. Many talented people are under-leveled and not making the amount of money they should. There is a huge lack of transparency towards decisions made. Equity and compensation is not offered fairly to employees.

Pros

They’re going away at the end of this year - the alphabet benefits

Cons

All the talent is leaving, especially after two key leaders in the product/research development announced their departures late last year. Leadership does silent layoffs so as not to gain media attention but does not acknowledge them internally - expected to do multiple people’s jobs, had been told for over a year that headcount would be hired and it never happened. Thought this was going to my long term job. One thing Verily does well - marketing a brand to make it seem successful despite not having any sustained profit or product since its founding. If I had known the environment would have been like this, I would have never joined - no amount of money or benefits is worth what is probably the most toxic environment I’ve ever worked in. This isn’t “google x” or “google life sciences ” anymore despite people putting that 8 year old statement on their LinkedIns. It’s a failing startup with inexperienced and incompetent leadership. If you want to work at Google, apply to Google.

Thank you for leaving your review and we’re sorry to hear you had this experience while you were at Verily. We hope that you shared more information as a part of your exit interview and encourage you to reach out to PACT directly at Verily-PACT@google.com if you'd like to provide additional feedback. Verily moves quickly and there have been several changes as the business has evolved in recent months, which we know can be challenging. As it relates to organizational changes, we make efforts to be as open and transparent as possible, while respecting the privacy of any employees who may have been directly affected. In practice that means that we may not be able to share as much detail as you’d like to have right out of the gate, or we may not be able to communicate as quickly as you’d like to hear. We are committed to continuing to do all we can to communicate openly and transparently and ensure that current employees know what's happening across the business. As relates to our benefits, Verily’s go-forward benefits are not going away at all - we’re staying with our same providers and offering nearly identical medical, dental and vision plans and no changes in premiums from 2024 to 2025. We know strong benefits are one of the many reasons Veeps are drawn to Verily and this is not changing. Thanks again for sharing, and we thank you for all you did while you were at Verily. We wish you all the best in your next role.
